Today we’d like to introduce you to Chikeitha Owens.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Chikeitha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
She is an established psychotherapist and entrepreneur in private practice devoted to transforming individual lives in the form of traditional therapy and speaking engagements. She graduated high school in 1994 from James Madison High school and went on to complete her Bachelors in Psychology from Southwestern Adventist University. She then completed her Masters in Professional Counseling and graduated from Argosy University/Dallas. She has been in private practice since 2009. Her practice began in Garland, Texas and she is now located in Corinth, TX.
I have been a mother and part-time pancreas of two boys for the past 15 years. If you think it’s challenging raising boys, imagine what it is like to be an organ for both of them as well. I have had a lifetime full of battling with health insurance carriers over what brands and supplies are covered with prescriptions, not to mention the constant stress of dealing with blood sugar levels of my children. It is a struggle a lot of parents must deal with and unfortunately, many have lost their children to type one diabetes before they have been properly diagnosed and treated. It is, as you can imagine, heartbreaking to go through. I realized that whatever thorns God allows in my life they are all to grow me and mold me for the greater purpose he has for my life and I instill the same message in my children. God has picked all of us on purpose for such a time as this and I must be about my Father’s business and share his goodness with as many people as possible.
I do everything I can to support these parents and advocate for Type One children: I did a talk on Dealing with the Emotional Rollercoaster children with Type One Juvenile Diabetes experience at a previous Type One Nation Summit for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I am currently on the planning committee for the Type One Nation Summit for the upcoming year, and I operate as a Volunteer Outreach worker for JDRF and mentor new families that are newly diagnosed. I would love to be able to continue to encourage families that are newly diagnosed and those that have no idea of the signs and symptoms to look for. Another barrier I will address, includes speaking and educating the daycare organizations and encouraging them to get their staff educated and trained in this area so Type One children can be able to socialize with their peers and attend daycare prior to entering grade school.
I have a project and training I am working towards that will give me access to resources which reach far beyond my own, and I will have the opportunity to participate in conferences all over the country. Once complete, I will be able to have a greater ability to make real change in the world. If you would like to follow me and learn more about my efforts or book me to come to speak to your organization, you can go to:

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at one time in her life she worked three jobs while attending school. Difficulties of not having the appropriate childcare to tend to the needs of children with type one diabetes which definitely affected my ability to work the way I wanted to.
Please tell us about Abundance of Hope Counseling – what should we know?
What sets me apart from others because I do not view my business and what I do as a job. I view it as a ministry and my purpose. I realized that my gift is not only needed coming from the couch providing individual therapy but it is also needed at the podium to reach the masses. I have worked with a variety of populations–including addicts in recovery, individual, and couples in crisis and children in foster care settings experiencing Trauma. I worked for the State of Texas for eight years in various sectors as an Investigator for the Texas Department of Family Protective Services investigating Child Abuse. She also worked for the office of Inspector General and in social services. I am a Passionate Spiritual author and published my first book “Living Life for What It Is.” I am now working on my second project, “The Abundance Experience.” Public Speaking Specialties include Spirituality, Women Empowerment, Domestic Violence, Trauma, Healthy Marriage, and Juvenile Type One Diabetes.
My most recent endeavor is the “Girl Talk Series”, Girls Talking on Purpose where women come together and network and learn about self-care while making it happen. I am working this with a two of my colleagues Grernalda Spears LPC and Sherry Flewellen Ervin. I also volunteer with the GB2K and R.J Foundation with Tracy Brooks focusing on “Your Pain Matters” Suicide Awareness and her Mentor/Leadership Program for the youth. I have a couple of non-profits that I am currently working with helping them in their business Barbara Pettis with Better Place Ministries (Domestic Violence Awareness) and Pastor Gloria Mcgee with M.A.R.R.E.D. Ministries (Domestic Violence awareness). I have also helped with Ms. Addie Debose Morgan’s Storge House of Love which is a transitional housing program once inmates are released from prison.
I volunteer because I believe in the importance of charity and I believe that we will reap what we sow.
Elite Speaker Prep Program focused on helping women tell their story.
Currently working with me is Tracy Brooks Life Coach and Big Boom “The Solution” (Celebrity Bodyguard for Steve Harvey). We are having ongoing free webinars. We will also have workshops. When they participate in the workshop they will also receive a copy of Big Boom’s book “If you want closer in your relationship, start with your legs.”
I was also nominated to receive the 2019 (November 16, 2019) Womanpreneur award from This and That Love Ministries (tatloveministry.com) founded by Lashanda Hearne. She chose 12 women and this award acknowledgment is based off of Proverbs 31:10-31 “Virtous Woman.”
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Husband: Warren Owens… been a supporter pushing me through and encouraging me that I can do it. And listening to all of my many ideas.
Mother. Alice Jackson. she was always there to support me no matter what. She cared for my last son who is now 5 while I worked. She has always supported me even when I decided I wanted to be an actor, she made sure I got my portfolio complete and placed me in acting classes and took me to all of my practices and auditions.
Grandmother. Inez Harris, she cared for my children while I worked and went to school and taught me many valuable lessons in life that have made me the woman I am today.
Family Friend… Jimmy Westcott, she encouraged me from day one after graduating from high school and has been supportive not only to me but my entire family.
Aunt. Dorothy Sanford… She advocated and pushed me through college and was a mentor to me.
All of my children for listening and allowing me to get on their nerves with my many ideas. They always give good suggestions.
I have many mentors, supporters and cheerleaders in my corner, these are just a few.
