Today we’d like to introduce you to Cardell Hunter.
Cardell, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After playing professional basketball for three years, I returned to the states to coach at my alma mater, Carter High. When the season started, I begin to notice some of our players weren’t eating the best foods before the games. I saw pizza, burgers, snacks from the vending machines, energy drinks, etc. and I knew I had to make a change. Soon after, CHOICE FOUNDATION was founded.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a nonprofit wasn’t an easy task. From paperwork to finding support (volunteer and financial), branding, building relationships and outworking the competition, it’s been tough. I’m blessed to have a great group of friends that has been there along the way to assist me with the challenges.
Please tell us about CHOICE Foundation.
CHOICE is an acronym for Choosing Healthier Options Is Chasing Excellence, #choosewisely. We specialize in making the community healthy, starting with the kids- providing fitness, nutrition, skills training and mentoring. In our 4 year tenure, we have provided services for Dallas ISD, Desoto ISD, and many AAU Organizations around the DFW. We also host basketball-inspired fitness camps as well as an annual back to school giveaways.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Making it to the state basketball tournament in Austin Tx, playing for Carter High School under my Dad as the coach.
