Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber LeBlanc.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amber. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story begins as a young child, always cutting my Barbie doll’s hair, and coloring it with Kool-Aid. Fast forward to me at 18, fresh out of high school and jumping right into cosmetology school. I enjoyed every aspect of it. I was a natural. Then, life hit. I was young and naive and decided to stop attending the cosmetology program to party and work in the service industry. My passion kept calling me. I met my wonderful husband, Rocky Cordova in 2011, who pushed me to return to school and get the license to have the career I wanted as a young girl. I had a lot of previous hours from the last time, but I decided to start over from the beginning. You can never have too much knowledge. I found a small school near my house. It wasn’t one of the big names, but I had the most amazing instructor. She was so passionate about sharing her knowledge and groomed me to be the colorist and business owner I am today. I started after school at a chain salon where I met a beautiful soul named Jordan and the rest was history. Her and I quickly believed we were separated at birth. We went off to a salon suite by ourselves and our friendship and careers grew together. Our clients quickly became friends, we had a lot of fun in that little room. Fast forward a couple of years, my husbands business partner and friend Jr Costilla (owner of Urbans Tattoo Studio) approached me about opening a salon. I was excited and terrified but I knew going into business with Rocky, Jr and his wife Sarah by my side we would be successful. The vision I had for the salon was to create the fun and inviting atmosphere Jordan and I worked for in our little suite times 10. I wanted to find an amazing group of employees to lift each other up and inspire each other daily.
After only opening in January of 2019, I currently have four beautiful souls working for me. I take my job as their salon owner and boss very seriously. I want to see them succeed and grow just as I have due to the people around me telling me I could do it. Every day, my girls are growing. Their businesses are flourishing. Some are buying houses, having babies, and finding themselves in a new salon they can call home. This salon has also opened up new opportunities to meet new people with inspiring stories. As I am building a brand, I want to stand out as not only being salon known for the quality of our services, but for a quality experience and family friendly atmosphere. We are a cozy little gem located behind Urbans Tattoo Studio South in Arlington, and even though we are not seen from the street, people around town are hearing about this fun little place called the Sugar Shack. This career changed my life and I want to use it to change the lives around me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Getting the salon up and running overall went pretty smooth! The usual obstacles are more of self-doubt; am I doing everything I can to be successful? Am I letting people down? Am I creating a happy and healthy environment for my employees and customers? The usual internal struggles. But I think we’re doing great!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Sugar Shack Salon and Spa – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We got our name The Sugar Shack from the bright colorful hair that we do often! We specialize in vivid services as well as all other coloring services such as balayage, blonding and grey blending.
We can also do any hair cut whether it be women’s, men, or children! We offer special treatments such as Brazilian Blow Outs and Olaplex treatments.
We also have a double certified lash artist and double certified microblading technician.
I am most proud of our company because we pride ourselves in making sure our employees are thriving. We want our salon family to be happy and successful in all aspects of their life not just behind the chair. Some of my employees are buying houses, and cars and keeping them successful is my number one priority.
Our fun and funky colorful decor definitely sets us apart. We have beautiful murals all over the inside and outside of the salon. As well as the experience and atmosphere during our client’s services. Our clients have fun and sometimes want to hang out even after they are all finished with their service.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plan for the future is to keep growing. I would eventually love to have multiple locations in Arlington, surrounding cities and even across the country. I’d love to also have one location dedicated to new and upcoming stylists that need help learning outside of school and need help growing their business and clientele. I would also like to add on other services in the esthetics and mail departments once we grow into a bigger location. Getting more involved in the community and using our craft to help the community is also something we have done and want to do more of.
