Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennedy Dendy.
Kennedy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a child, if you would’ve asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have told you “Oprah Winfrey.” I’ve been inspired and have looked up to countless women of color on the television screens and in my own life since I was young, and that is the type of person I strive to be for someone else one day.
As my high school days came to an end and the time for college decisions was approaching, I began to wonder what I would want to study and become involved in throughout this next chapter of my life. I knew I loved to write, so the idea of journalism seemed interesting. I made the decision to attend Baylor University in the fall of 2016, and before I began my first days on campus, I had already applied, auditioned and landed a sports broadcasting job for the university’s athletics video department. The broadcasting world was completely new to me, but I was eager for something new, and my determination was shown. My freshman year looked a little different than many, but I could not be more grateful for chasing after what now has become my passion.
After a year in the sports reporting world, I decided to give news reporting a try by applying to Baylor’s broadcasting program. From that moment on, I have been immersed in an industry that I know is where I am meant to be. I applied and just completed a 10-week summer internship with CBS News in New York City, and it was truly an incredible experience. I am now about to begin my final semester at Baylor University, where I will continue to tell stories that the world needs to hear. I strive to be a voice to the voiceless, and I want to inspire young aspiring journalists that no dream is too big.
Has it been a smooth road?
Life was not always easy for my family and me, but God has always been faithful. I was only five years old when I walked into my home just moments after my father had taken his life. It’s a vivid picture in my mind still to this day. The shock and confusion that suddenly filled my young body was an experience that no one should have to face. With the support of my incredible mother, twin brother and friends, I decided that I would not let my past define my future. I know my father would be very proud of the person I am becoming, and I strive to make him proud. His legacy will never be forgotten.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a senior journalism major at Baylor University, and I serve as the Executive Producer for Lariat TV News. In addition, I am a broadcast reporter and news anchor for Baylor’s weekly newscast program. I plan to pursue a career in the broadcast journalism industry after graduation.
