Today we’d like to introduce you to Rya Bosley.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started four years ago. That feeling you have in your gut that something was wrong, something was off. First, I started losing weight like crazy. You are at the peak of your age, supposedly healthy, and what could go wrong? I lost 25 lbs in one month by eating two plates of food. All other side effects started to appear at the same time: the awful leg cramps at night, the neverending hunger, and constant unbearable thirst. I went to the doctor and after some lab work, I got the call my blood glucose was off the charts. Every type 1 diabetic remembers that day for the rest of their life. It’s your diabetaversary, day 0 of the diagnosis. It is the day that changes the rest of your life, the day you learn how to give yourself an injection 1 of thousands to be able to live. You learn things like insulin, shots, carbohydrates, how to be your own nutritionist, what food does exactly to your body.
For about a year, I was trying to find my own groove and figure this whole diabetes thing out. You learn, you make mistakes, you see results. After about a year I decided that glucose roller coaster wasn’t what I wanted, and I started my path to health.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think my biggest challenge was managing the glucose during my pregnancy. Hormones can throw you a curveball. Once you think you’ve mastered it, think again. Every day is entirely different, and the most important thing is to stay within healthy margins to make sure your baby is growing and getting everything she needs. This is the reason I started to document all of the progress with type 1 diabetes and pregnancy on Instagram. I have had people reach out to me and ask questions. I am not a medical professional, but I can tell you what I did to stay healthy and make sure diabetes was not a problem during my pregnancy. I hope to inspire others, to show that you can have a normal life with type 1 diabetes.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My hope is to empower other women, to offer inspiration, and to show you can live with an auto-immune disease and enjoy your life. Some might think that getting a type 1 diabetes diagnosis is devastating. I think it has taught me to think differently, to cook differently and to raise my family differently.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Accept change and be ready to adapt. Life rarely works out the way you think it would, but it doesn’t mean life isn’t working out. Be the best version of yourself, the sky is the limit. Be an example to others.
