Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Sternberg, CEO and Co-founder of Honor, and Mike Boggs, Head of Sales in Dallas.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Seth and Mike. So, Seth, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there. How did you come up with the idea to build Honor?
I’ve been an entrepreneur all my life and for this venture I really wanted to work on a company where I could make a significant impact on improving people’s lives. I went to visit my mother and when she picked me up at the airport, I noticed she was driving pretty slowly. My mother is typically a total lead foot, so I asked her why the change?
“Driving isn’t as easy as it used to be.” That really jolted me. I started looking into how I’d be able to ensure Mom could do what she’d want—stay in her own home—as she ages, while I’m living thousands of miles away. As I looked at home care options, I noticed we’re stuck in the same place we were 20 years ago when my mother was caring for my grandmother.
Mike, why did Dallas feel like an important place for Honor?
Dallas is a great place for Honor because it has a vibrant medical community and a strong caregiver community. With a large senior population, many of whom want to age in their own homes, we felt Dallas was a really good place for Honor to support the caregiving community with reliable care and provide the medical community with a reliable option for patients in need of home care. Both allow seniors to continue to age safely in their own homes.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with all startups, there are ups and downs and that’s a necessary part of the journey towards success. Without failures, you don’t learn. We’ve had to really understand the challenges of the industry, why home care hasn’t changed much, how we can innovate, and what can we do for the caregiver workforce to really make impactful change. What inspires me so much is how quickly our team learns and then makes Honor constantly better for both our Care Professionals and our Customers.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Honor – what should we know?
Honor has the best care providers, without fail. It’s one part the thoroughness with which we screen people who apply to Honor. It’s another part enabling Care Professionals to be excellent by giving them better pay than industry average, and also much better tools so that they can be amazing at their jobs. Our unique technology allows clients who have issues with mobility, memory loss, or heart problems to be matched with Care Pros who have training and experience in those areas. In the end, it’s important to remember that if you take care of the Care Pros, they will take better care of our loved ones.
Is there a characteristic or quality about Honor that you feel is essential to success?
We demonstrate respect for Care Pros by always paying them above average wages where they live. We also offer the flexibility to pick their own schedules and clients.
This empowers them to make informed decisions around their personal schedules and family lives. When we facilitate this kind of personal autonomy, we see impressive results in their engagement with clients too. At Honor, 99.7% of client appointments are filled and 95% of appointments start on time thanks to our Care Pros. The combination of better pay, respect and scheduling flexibility sets Honor apart from others in the industry.
