Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Bruneau.
Cristina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The inspiration for our company started with a personal passion. My oldest daughter developed acute kidney failure and was in need of a kidney transplant. Since kidneys are the body’s filtration system, anything that you ingest or that is absorbed through the skin eventually is passed through the kidneys, as a result ingesting or using topical products that contain harmful chemicals can put a strain on the kidneys and cause problems and malfunction of other organs as well. I began researching organic products in earnest & aside from consuming a healthy diet, free of hormones and chemicals, formulating and creating natural remedies and solutions for skin care and total body wellness became a passion. I quickly realized that in order to have quality organic skincare products in particular, I’d have to make them myself using pure, high-quality organic ingredients.
My mom was a great inspiration and help as well since she still knows many of the family recipes passed down from generation to generation in Mexico.
As I perfected the recipes and started using them, friends and family started asking for their own products. I gave body butters, face creams, and oils as gifts and they came back for more. I realized there was a need in the market for quality organic skincare products so I teamed up with Suzanna Dupuy, my business partner, and we launched Beauty by Apothecary in June of this year, with the goal of making high-quality organic skincare products and remedies that are simple and authentic with potency and efficacy that consumers can depend on, Quality & efficacy are paramount to us! Consequently, we insist on using only the highest quality ingredients, ethically and locally sourced (USA when possible). No cutting corners; with every last detail in mind including the packaging.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When researching the market, we saw that there is a host of products that are labeled “Organic” and “natural” but for the most part are packaged in plastic containers, & still contain a host of questionable preservatives and chemicals in order to have a longer shelf life. One of our biggest challenges is maintaining a favorable shelf life while not compromising the integrity & quality of the product. We achieve this by using truly organic preservatives as well as using amber glass containers that protect the quality and purity of the product, & is also environmentally friendly.
Beauty by Apothecary – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We do not use parebens, petrochemicals, sulfates, silicones, or artificial fragrances or coloring. Our products are carefully handcrafted in batches to ensure quality and potency.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To educate people on the importance of not only what you ingest, but also what you are absorbing through your skin, and to make these products available. To be a company that people can depend on for high quality truly organic skincare.
