Today we’d like to introduce you to Shenice Brown.
Shenice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I wish I could say I been doing hair since I was a kid and always had a passion for it but I haven’t that was my sister. I actually didnt like doing hair, and I definitely couldn’t make a straight line in a person’s head. School taught me the basics of everything I know. I actually thought I wanted to be a Crime scene investigator. Also a wedding planner, commercial lawyer and interior designer, obviously I was all over the place. I just knew I wanted to help others. My Father Has been a licensed barber for over 25 years so he was determined for one of us to take up the career. My Parents encouraged cosmetology because they knew I would make the funds to put myself through school if I still choose to. I started my journey in 2008 at National beauty college in Garland and finished at a Hispanic school in Dallas. Normally it would take someone 18 months to finish school. It took me way long do to life obstacles. I received my braiding license in 2010 and a few years later, my cosmetology license. I received great knowledge from a variety of influential teachers. My true skills didn’t come until the lady my father worked for taking a chance on me and let me come work her salon in Plano. I had no car so I went to work with my father every day 8 am sometimes 5 am to close. I did this months straight, with having not one clients in my chair. I was still determined to make my parents proud. I started off shampooing the barber clients before and after a haircut and one year later, I met my first consistent client and grew from there. I followed my father and watched him and the other talented stylists that I was blessed to work amongst. I’m a visual learner so my skills kept manifesting when I was around creativity and perfection. We went from shop to shop every 2 1/2 years, some three months and it bothered me greatly. I knew I had to be around humbleness, laugher, hunger to thrive and see each other win and work as a team with respect and love, not greed and jealousy. I wanted to be comfortable and do something for my family so I open SHECOSMO Barbershop and hair salon May of 2016
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This was definitely not a smooth road for me. It had its flowing times but more rough times. It took me a while to finally get fully certified, that was frustrating but a lot of my fight. My trials of working in a shop was stressful but it didn’t defeat me. I was put out of a shop after 2 years because I was the daughter of my father whom they let go prior, Then, I was at another shop that was the start of my growth in clientele, and it closed so I jumped around until I I helped someone open and managed a salon and saw the ups and downs of a salon as far as money, bills and co-working amongst different personalities. This is where I learned a lot about my self-personality being a leader for a group and understanding the line between social and work. This was the first time in my career of doing hair where I was without my father for 2 years. I had to grow up and that I did and opened SHECOSMO … owning a salon can be fun yet overwhelming I had my days I went into the bathroom and cried but I came out like a boss and kept moving ..I went through things from plumbing disasters to finding the perfect co-worker. It took a lot of time, patience and obedience to get here. I have a long way to go and a lot of huge goal to conquer, so I have to continue staying strong and focused.
shecosmo – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I had and have insecurity like everyone else. A lot came from kids being kids growing up. Others just life experiences that didnt go my way and I couldn’t shake it. I want to make people see themselves in a light of confidence … so I started going by Beautyhighlighter … that my personal name I specialize in Locs natural hair braids color and Sheer work. My first love will always be Locs then color, I’m known as an all-around stylist but majority of my clients are Locs. I’m deferent from most stylist because of my background in braiding and I do it all .. I can make someone look the best they can and stand back and say “Dang They are fly, I did that without envy “ . Now SHECOSMO is from my name Shenice Cosmetology we are a Barbershop and hair salon located in Plano Tx. We are deferent from A lot of shops because of our laugher and important knowledge from life experiences we give. We have been blessed from God with skills and a variety is specialties we all bring including nail techs. All of this greatness is in one shop and I’m so proud to have a group of individuals around each other that fully support each other’s growth. A great person told me “just because I teach u something doesn’t mean my skills go away “ that’s powerful to a group of thriving individuals.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My most proudest moment was when I got the approved certification letter from the city saying I can open the doors to SHECOSMO Barbershop and Hairsalon. A lot of people tried to talk me out of it and said I didn’t have the people skills or smart enough to open a shop. Over three years later, we still here and here to stay.
