Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Moon.
Shelley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Back in 2006, I was planning my wedding and wanted to create something special for my seven bridesmaids. Off to the bead store I went within 10 minutes, I knew exactly what I wanted to create and the result was something I’ll never forget when I gave my ‘thank you’ gifts. This creative process gave me so much happiness and satisfaction. Sadly, I didn’t keep up with it, but the feeling of joy I felt while creating gave me peace that I will never forget.
Fast forward to 2018. I had my own business as a documentary family photographer. However, I was burnt out and was looking for something in my life that was more fulfilling. I had just finished my weekend workshop for mindful practice and meditation with Conscious Transformation. Something had changed within me instantly and I had clarity that I never had before. I walked out feeling I could accomplish anything. For the first time in my life, I had a vision of being a ‘creator’ of my own universe, I felt complete freedom. With that feeling, I picked up my old passion once more on my kitchen table and I haven’t been able to stop. On this new journey, I am dedicated to creating something meaningful and beautiful, each design hand-crafted right here in Austin, Texas.
I had many supportive girlfriends around me during this journey. And to honor them, every design has been created with a friend in mind. They inspire, influence, motivate and uplift me by being fabulous human beings. Without my tribe, I wouldn’t be here today, doing what I am passionate about. So I continue to create and feel fulfilled working at popup shows around town here in Austin.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been a serial entrepreneur since 2010. It’s never been easy as an entrepreneur, but I firmly believe in having ‘grit’ for my success, which makes me learn and grow. Rumi once said, “Although the road is never-ending, take a step and keep walking, do not look fearfully into the distance… On this path let the heart be your guide for the body is hesitant and full of fear.” The difference between a successful and unsuccessful entrepreneur is that the successful one doesn’t EVER quit. I have found that by celebrating every little success with gratitude goes a long way vs. being critical or judgemental of yourself.
Obstacles are necessary for personal and professional growth. Every time I started a new business, I always surround myself with people that gave me unconditionally love and support. This is so important because when you start to have dubious thoughts about yourself, about your vision for your business, you must have people that you can count on for support.
Tell us more about you. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of and what sets you apart from others?
Shelley Moon Designs started last year when I picked up my previous hobby from 13 years ago. I offer luxurious items at an affordable price in 24K & 14K gold-filled gold and silver plated using gemstones. I enjoy building my brand organically in-person by selling at various markets and popup shows. I do sell online but only carry my best selling items. If you want to see what’s new, one-of-a-kind jewelry designs, you must come and see me at popup shows/markets.
My jewelry designs are one of a kind and that is what draws people initially, but I have learned from selling at markets that people buy from people when you genuinely connect with them. I make it a point not to sell from standing behind my booth, but to engage with customers, getting to know them by asking questions to find out what they’re looking for. With that mentality along with my personal experiences at markets, making connections with others has been way more rewarding and fun vs. reading any book that teaches on ‘how to sell’ to people.
I have a long way to go as I started this company not too long ago, but I am proud of where I am heading. This company was sparked with an idea and motivation that occurred after my meditation workshop. I firmly believe in giving back to my community. So, I am currently looking at few organizations to partner up with to donate part of my sales, time or ideally both. Discipline, hard work, perseverance, and generosity of spirit are far more important and greater in my belief.
What sets me apart from my others? I realize there are many talented jewelry designers in town. However, if I had to describe what makes my brand special would be that I try my hardest to go above and beyond when it comes to providing excellent customer service. For example, I had a customer recently that ordered a few pieces for his wife for their wedding anniversary. I didn’t have what he wanted in stock, so he had to wait a few weeks. For his patience and understanding, I sent him an extra necklace to show my appreciation. I also gave him a follow-up call to check that he got his items in the mail. He then replied letting me know how grateful and appreciative he was for receiving everything on time. When you show your customers that you care, for sure you will have repeat customers for life.
Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours? If someone was just starting out, would you recommend them starting out here? If not, what can our city do to improve?
Austin is a great place to live and work for creatives/makers of all kinds. Whether you’re in the music scene or a jewelry designer like myself, I have felt nothing, but love and support from my fellow entrepreneurs around town. There are so many opportunities that are readily available. You just have to seek and apply yourself! You just have to GO FOR IT!! What I least like about Austin is the hot, summer weather. That’s about it. I’m originally from California, so I’m a wimp when I have to endure 100+ degrees weather. Otherwise, it’s a great city to live and raise a family. We made the right decision to move when we did 9 years ago.
