Meet Trailblazer Ghazel Rashid and Amy Admani

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ghazel Rashid and Amy Admani.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ghazel and Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
With Dallas becoming the fastest growing Muslim community and home to some very famous Muslim Scholars, the city became filled with transplants from all over the country. This scattered community came together through events at the Mosque, or through Friday prayers. Although the community was very tight-knit there was a lack of connection and/or events focused only on Muslim women. Seeing this as an opportunity to fill in this gap, we started Jade + Grey, a platform for Muslim women to connect with one another through workshops and various fun events, in order to create a stronger bond and sisterhood with like-minded women.

Through Jade + Grey we started to build a following of women that were ready to step out of their comfort zone and try something new, whether a fun workout class, a journal workshop, or just coming forward to share their struggles in certain aspects of their lives. Jade + Grey on Instagram has also become a space where we share some of the anonymous stories that are emailed to us from various women, who are brave enough to write out their struggles as Muslim women and how they conquered certain issues that they were facing. This approach allowed us to address some of the most unconventional topics that we do not discuss openly in our community and also gives our followers an opportunity to relate to these stories – ultimately giving them a sense of belonging, which is what Jade + Grey stands for.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When starting out with Jade + Grey, it was important for us to stay true to our mission: to empower women in our community, and create a sisterhood with one each other. For us to remain authentic in our approach and not get sucked into the trends and commercialize our platform has been a struggle. But, at the end of the day, we want to ultimately focus on the quality of our events, and how we are bringing women together in order for this to remain a safe space for all women.

Please tell us about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
Our proudest moments are the feedback we receive from our attendees and followers after hosting an event or workshop. Our ultimate goal is to cut out the competitions and stereotypes about women that pin us against one another. With each event, I believe we get one step closer to this goal. Helping people and connecting with each other is what keeps jade + grey alive.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
With media showcasing movements that highlight the challenges women face in their professional and personal lives has really created a shift in our current culture. This has allowed women to have more opportunities to own their decisions and individuality. With that said, I still believe that we have a long way to go in other aspects, yet there is definitely a shift and sense of growth that has been more positive.
