Today we’d like to introduce you to Rheason Leverett.
Rheason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had an interest in hair. Growing up I was always the friend asking to braid your hair. That ended up translating into a curiosity of hair color and cutting that resulted in me needing a few color corrections… from there I saw the technical process of hairstyling and knew it’s what I wanted to do. With the initial plan of getting my license to work my way through college – I graduated high school a year and a half early and started hair school two weeks after my 17th birthday!
A week into cosmetology school I knew hair was my passion and that college wasn’t for me. I fell in love with the science behind hair & with the connections I make with each client.
Since finding my salon home at Beauty Hive my passion for hairstyling has only multiplied! Being in a supportive environment where I’m encouraged to soak up every bit of knowledge I can is so so refreshing. I wake up every morning excited to learn more, grow as a stylist, and become a better human all thanks to the Beauty Hive Tribe!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road, but it’s been a very good road trip! Since I started my career at a young age there has definitely been people who are apprehensive about taking a chance with me.
And of course, there was the worry and “left out” feeling of not taking the college route. Some people have definitely questioned my decision but ultimately my family back me up and I know this is the correct path for me!
Luckily I found Beauty Hive and a team of open arms who don’t see me as a teenager but as an equal. My advice to other young women starting out, especially as young as me, is to be confident in yourself and in your work and always be willing to learn.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
I specialize in lived-in color & modern blondes. I love being able to provide styles that are trendy and “instagrammable” but that withstand the test of time and are able to have a low maintenance 3-6 month grow out!
As a service provider, it feels amazing to get to be a part of each and every clients lives in this special way. At Beauty Hive we pride ourselves on being day makers. For me that means being there to listen to my clients, connect, and laugh with them. Since I specialize in lived in color I’m generally only having full-color appointments with my clients every couple months which means I want every minute of that appointment to make them feel special and deserving of the best service possible!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I met my current mentor, Nicole (@nicole.beautyhive), at a continued education class. I followed her on social media and we occasionally kept in touch as I watched the Beauty Hive team grow via Instagram and felt totally jealous. I wanted so badly to be part of a team that was as supportive and as invested in education & client experience as they were! That’s when I decided to apply, come into shadow for the day, and eventually join the team!
My advice for finding a mentor and your own path in the industry is definitely to put yourself out there – take continued education, send Instagram messages, shadow in salons your interested in! And the most important part: never settle. Finding a salon home that you feel proud to be apart of, excited to show up to and that gives you room to grow is key.
