Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Banerjee.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sam. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
14 years ago, I was a computer programmer and miserable, and always had a passion to have a business of my own. One day a hone health nurse came by the house to draw blood for life insurance, and that got me thinking. I took a CNA (Certified nurse’s Assistant) course in the evening to learn more about the field, and started Aunt Mae’s Home Care, a non medical home care company, and ran it on the side for 5 years until I could live on it full time. It has been a wonderful experience, and I love working in a field where I am so directly helping other people. Today we have almost 300 clients that we help with bathing, dressing, housekeeping and other non medical tasks, enabling them to continue living at home, where they are happiest, instead of having to move to a nursing home.
This year I started a second company, Life Skills Academy, where we teach a 10 week course to Middle and High School age kids in non academic life skills such as critical thinking, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, and household maintenance. I strongly believe these are vital life skills which can be taught a formal setting, which schools today unfortunately do not have the time to teach.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not always. The main problem was slow growth at first, so perseverance was very important. The only thing that made it possible was that I was able to start both businesses part time, so I had income coming in from another job while waiting for the businesses to get on their feet.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started the whole process much earlier. If someone has parents they can live with while they are getting started (which was not a n option for me) that is a huge help, that means you can devote yourself full time to your business without having to worry about supporting yourself.
