Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Mayo.
Brittany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor born and raised in Washington, DC. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, as well as a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. For the past ten years, I have dedicated my life to serving others through my work. I took a special interest in adolescents after working for the Department of Corrections where I provided therapy for juveniles charged with adult crimes. I’ve always been a self- starter and knew that I was called to be an entrepreneur and leader.
However, it wasn’t until two years ago that God opened the doors for me to jump! In 2017, I Co-Founded HHCSS (Helping Hands Community Support Services), a behavioral health agency offering counseling and case management in the Dallas- Fort Worth Metroplex. Our mission is to promote growth, autonomy, recovery, resiliency, and empowerment. Currently, Helping Hands serves over 200 community members, has two locations (Dallas and Fort Worth), and is committed to giving back to the community, as 10% of our clients are serviced pro bono.
Has it been a smooth road?
I love the saying, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans”. The road to success was definitely not a smooth one. I am a planner, but the process of starting a business has made me really look to God for guidance and to order my steps. I attribute all of my achievements to this.
I would have to say everything was a struggle. Literally, nothing went as planned. Before launching we spent a year completing paperwork. We ended up needing to re-do that same paperwork over in a matter of three to six months while actually running the agency. My two partners and I were working at least four different positions each. It can be very overwhelming when you’re constantly problem-solving and putting out fires but I stayed calm and resolved one issue at a time. Eventually, the pieces began to come together.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Helping Hands Community Support Services is a behavioral health agency offering counseling and case management in the Dallas- Fort Worth Metroplex. Our mission is to promote growth, autonomy, recovery, resiliency, and empowerment. We have an adult program (Lynell’s House), which is named after my late grandmother, and a child/adolescent program (The Helping Hands Program). Our program is community-based meaning staff meets with the participants at home, at school or in other natural environments. Our program is unique because we are dedicated to giving back to our community and those we serve by implementing volunteer experiences and exposure activities. In the last year, our agency has sponsored a College Tour, Dallas Cowboys Games and Six Flags activities to name a few. I’m most proud of the staff we have and how we execute our mission. I would like to highlight my Team Leads, Dara and Sabrina. They are both dedicated to implementing the agency’s mission. Dara for example consistently goes out of her way to connect people to unique resources and opportunities, and Sabrina is amazing at training her team and leading by example.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is a great city for mental/behavioral health programs and I would recommend that someone starting out consider Dallas.
