Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Brown.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Hannah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been performing since I was 8 years old. My mom saw the gift of the arts in me and enrolled me in Sidney Lanier Elementary where I started being in the Vanguard Program, specializing in Theatre and Dance. Then as I progressed scholastically, I went to W. E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Middle School specializing in Theatre and honing my skills as an actor, director and playwright. In my 8th grade year, I auditioned for Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts with my focus being Theatre. During my duration as Pegasus at Booker T, I embarked on several amazing journeys that coupled with families values helped shaped me into the woman I have become such as working extremely hard in the advanced academic setting, becoming a member of the Mime Troupe, singing in the school Gospel Choir, having an acting role in a large number of the plays during my tenor at Booker T and then in my senior year writing, directing, singing and dancing in my own one-women statement piece entitled “The Evolution of Symone”. I am currently enrolled full time at the Illustrious Prairie View A&M University as a 19-year-old Education major with aspirations of becoming an English Teacher. Outside of my academics, I have obtained the roles and responsibilities of Miss Sophomore as well as an assistant to the Office of Student Engagement.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. It hasn’t. Nothing in life that is worth having is an easy fight or an easy road. Anything worth having is worth the obstacles you have to overcome. My struggles mostly stem from being bullied most of life up until middle school. Being bullied caused a lot of insecurities when it came to my self-esteem or my gifts and even though I have come a long way in my self-love, there is still more work to be done. I have always been different, I have always been the exception, but instead of viewing the things that make me peculiar as negative baggage, I now see them as the magic sparkles God bestowed upon me to set me apart.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an artist. I sing, act, dance, write and direct. I truly thank God for all of the talents he has given me. I am known for my acting due to the many leadership roles I have had the opportunity to play in high school. I am the proudest of my versatility. No matter who you ask, they will tell you for sure that I am always working and investing in myself whether that be performing or mentoring or hosting events on campus. I am always trying to transform myself into the most refined version I can be and I won’t stop until I get there. The main thing that sets me apart isn’t necessarily the talents I have but the way I carry and execute in the talents I have. Many people can sing or dance or even act, but they can’t make you feel the way I do when I flow in my gifts.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career would have to be performing at the KASHMOVEMENT”S: Untapped the Finale. I have always been behind the scenes such as recruiting artists for the events, but this was the first time I actually performed. I had the pleasure of performing my song JULY 21st which I wrote and helped produce. It was truly the highlight of my summer but the highlight of my career so far. I had the pleasure of sharing such a vulnerable moment of my life with my family, friends and it was received so well. My heart is forever humbled and I am forever changed. This moment was the confirmation I needed to know that I can pursue my music with full force.
