Meet Alicia Makaye of GXA in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Makaye.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
GXA is a business founded on a passion for giving to the underprivileged. For an IT business, that may not seem logical. GXA was inspired by a desire to have the freedom of time and resources to invest in philanthropic endeavors. My husband and business partner, George Makaye, and I first met in 2000. We both have the hearts to serve and give on a much larger scale. We experienced and witnessed firsthand the devastation of poverty that children around the world face every day. How does that translate into an Information Technology business? George and I realized that if we worked for ourselves, we could take control of our time and our income. Together, we possessed the talents to start our own business – George is an IT genius with impeccable customer service skills. I am an Air Force Veteran with a Ph.D. and expertise in business operations, strategy and people. We are a formidable team, serving our customers diligently for the past 15 years.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We founded GXA in 2004 at a time when technology was taking off and becoming an integral part of almost every business. There was a growing need for IT services. But shortly after we began, the dot.com bubble burst. That could have spelled disaster for us. It didn’t, however. We were nimble, affordable and had already built a loyal client base. We kept growing when other businesses were closing. The services we provide are essential for businesses, but not always affordable when businesses have to hire staff to handle IT. Many cannot afford a dedicated internal team. That’s where we come in to provide trusted business IT consulting, solutions, and support to other businesses.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
GXA offers essential IT solutions for small to medium-sized businesses that have the same need for security and functionality as Fortune 500 companies but lack the hefty budget. We offer managed IT services which can include network security, business continuity plans, cloud backups, email services, professional IT consulting, disaster recovery, cybersecurity as well as assigning a Virtual CIO to help map out a plan to meet the business needs. GXA can help clients by upgrading networks, resolving day-to-day end-user issues, protecting businesses to ensure they have the necessary security to minimize hackers, managing software and hardware choices, network upgrades, and recover data. We have the ability to customizes packages to meet the client’s needs.

At GXA, we can serve as a dedicated IT department for our clients, allowing them to focus on the business of their business rather than wrangling with technology. We are trusted in the community and known for our dedication to preventing and solving technology-related problems. Today when ransomware attacks are rampant, hackers lurk online and a system crash can spell disaster for a company, having a team with the experience of our GXA staff is critical.

We’re proud that we have built a business that stood the test of time. We’ve earned a solid reputation for our quick response, depth of knowledge, and dedication, especially in a crisis. We started in business 15 years ago and are still going strong despite economic ups and downs. We’re especially proud that our very first client still depends on our services 15 years later. And, our very first employee still works with us. We’re thrilled they value us as a business and a member of the Dallas-Fort Worth community.

We are dedicated to helping fellow business owners to focus on growing their businesses. We relieve them of the burden of worrying about whether their systems are updated, backed up, or safe. When a crisis arises, they have peace of mind knowing that we are there to resolve any issue and will work round-the-clock if necessary.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The qualities that I feel are most important to our success are resiliency, relentless, persistence, character and keeping our “why” we started GXA as the forefront of our company culture. GXA has been able to withstand and recover from difficult situations by the Grace of God. However, to overcome those difficult challenges we had to be relentless and persistent by staying the course regardless of the challenges. We had to operate our business and personal lives with integrity. We have a clear understanding there are no shortcuts to success and it takes time. Our road to success means showing up every day daring to build better businesses and stronger communities.
