Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Herring.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Drew. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was just 9 years old, I received my first camcorder. I began filming my siblings and friends doing what kids do, from skateboarding to silly little skits. That was the moment that the idea of being a “cameraman” for a living first came to fruition. Ever since then I have done everything in my power to make a career using cameras. As I grew up, I knew film school was where I wanted to be for college. I chose to attend the University of North Texas and have graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Media Arts. I now work full time as a photographer and videographer for a Dallas based supplement company, MAN Sports. I also try to freelance as much work as possible, while continuing to film skateboarding, short films, and other miscellaneous videos for my pleasure.
Has it been a smooth road?
Life never has a smooth road, especially in the photo/film industry. As many know, camera equipment is outrageously expensive. Being a young filmmaker, obtaining the equipment I needed was always a huge struggle. I’m very proud of the equipment I have acquired over the years but, even now, I’m constantly looking for goods deals and cheap ways to upgrade my arsenal.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
As a photographer and videographer, I’m very open to the types of content I shoot. I have shot everything from portraits, family photos, weddings, headshots, fitness videos, skateboarding, music, nature, and nearly anything in between. I’d say my specialties would be landscapes, music, and skateboarding. These are all the things I’m very passionate about, so combining these passions with my biggest passion (photography/videography) always makes for grade A content.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see this industry growing exponentially in the next five to ten years. Mirrorless cameras are rapidly pushing DSLRs out of the picture, while sensors and monitors are getting more pixels than ever. And the new Black Magic Pocket Cinema 6k has really bridged the gap between entry level cinema cameras, and professional quality ones. And it’s at a crazy price range! The technology just keeps getting better, and I expect 10 years to hold things that we never even thought were possible.
