Today we’d like to introduce you to David McGarry.
David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It was 20 years ago this summer that I came to Dallas to do an internship at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. I thought my plan was just to be here for the summer and go back to living in Florida where I was from. However, little did I know I would meet my now wife of 17 years and build my career here. I have spent the last 20 years working as a fitness manager, personal trainer, and fitness entrepreneur. I have always had a passion to help people become fit and encourage them to strive for a healthier life.
With that being said, I also came to the realization that there are only so many hours in the day and also only one me, which limits the amount of people I can work with on a daily basis. But, ever since the Dot Com era of the early 2000″s I have been working to use the Internet to reach out and help more people and help them get fit. My first entrepreneurial venture was a website called Working Mom Workouts. Since I had already been working with busy and working moms I created a member site that provided weekly workouts to my clients who subscribed to the site. This was pre-social media so my reach was limited and most of the members were former clients of mine from the days I worked at the Premier Club in Dallas. Fast forward to today and my newest venture, “Fit Over 40 Challenge.” Yes, I am now in my 40’s and primarily coach men and women in their 40’s. I now live in Frisco, TX, just North of Dallas and work one on one with clients, but thanks to the internet and all the newest technology I am able to coach clients in Dallas and all over the U.S. I recently wrote a book, “Fit Over 40 Challenge” to help people get started on their journey to becoming fit regardless of how old they are. I also have a monthly online fitness transformation coaching program that goes with it. As I continue along this path I am thankful that I am able to use my gifts to continue to change lives a make Dallas a healthier city to be a part of!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Although I have an MBA starting a business is not as easy as one may think. My first site Working Mom Workouts still exists today but not really understanding all the web techie stuff and Internet marketing did not produce the results to sustain the business in the early days. Now, my latest venture is taking off the challenges that I face is there is more competition for online training.
Please tell us about McGarry Wellness Solutions.
I have an online fitness coaching business. With the advancement of technology working with a fitness coach no longer needs to be localized to a specific gym or location. I have over 20 years of experience working with men and women helping them transform their lives and become fit. With my online coaching, I use the strategies that I have used with hundreds of clients to get them the same results but instead of being with them face to face I use apps and technology to communicate with them as well provide fitness programming they can do at home or at their gym.
Probably what I am most proud of is I recently published a book “Fit Over 40 Challenge” in January and it became an Amazon Best Seller. What really separates my coaching and business from others is getting fit is more than just lifting weights and cardio. I use an outcome based approach that is focused on each individual client to help them specifically with their needs.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Stayed laser focused on adding value to the community and establishing myself as the go to person for fitness.
