Meet Sunshine Capone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sunshine Capone.

Sunshine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I still remember the feeling in my chest when I first entered the booth, my heart was beating at a million miles a minute, my palms were sweaty and I was afraid that I had made a mistake. After years of begging my brother-in-law Goldie to give me a chance to record, that day was finally here. That day in the booth, a fire ignited inside of me and I felt a sense of clarity and direction. After that night, I spent the next three months writing my debut album “1929”, a dueling tale of the highs and lows in my life and the constant battle between good and bad thoughts. My album released February 28, 2019, and on that day I had my very first performance, at the Prophet Bar, in Deep Ellum. Less than a week later I won an open mic competition with the prize being a slot to perform at the Granda Theater. I’ve graced many of the stages since February from Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Austin to Oklahoma.

I’ve opened for a national artist and even headlined my own show. What’s to come? New music is in the works for my new project and I’ve also been experimenting in front of and behind the camera.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being an artist is very hard work. something I honestly did not expect, the time that goes into perfecting your craft is both fun and laboring and the sacrifices you’ll be making will affect the people around you. Being a mother to a small child, going on the road is an agonizing decision but I knew it was best for us, so I made every show away from my baby worthwhile. Being a completely independent artist as I am, funding myself can become very taxing, from the studio time, pictures, video shoots, performance outfits, makeup and hair, it can easily become overwhelming. One thing however that follows me no matter what I do is that I am a woman in a male-dominated industry. I find myself constantly having to prove myself and ensuring that my content and performances are pristine because if not I will be cast into a group that I personally feel I do not belong to. I am a multilayered person and often as women in hip-hop we are not allowed to show range, we must be about one thing at all times, and as we all know that thing is SEX, I for one have more pressing issues in my life than just sex. Things like: motherhood, life tribulations, depression, happiness and motivation, love, loss, pride, and all things between, That choice, however, not to be a typical female artist does have ramifications, and when you go against the grain, you are bound to get a few cuts.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
The thing that I’m most proud of would be my fans, I write from my heart and my experiences so having people appreciate and enjoy what I do is extremely rewarding for me. Sunshine Capone as a whole is the embodiment of my life journey, not only mine but also a representation for the many people who have shared experiences like mine. I want my music to be fun, uplifting, thought-provoking, honest, and raw.

The difference between myself and other artists is that I write from a standpoint of evolution none of my music sounds the same I write each piece as if they are to stand alone. I don’t have a signature sound or a particular approach and it is completely intentional.

What were you like growing up?
As a child I was adventurous, imaginative, a deep thinker, very bubbly and affectionate. I’ve always loved music, have a fondness of horror movies, passion for cooking and a constant desire to be happy.
