Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivan Meyers.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ivan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m originally from Killeen Texas but moved out to San Antonio at the age of five. I’ve always had a musical background with my family, my dad was a trumpet player at the southern university of Louisiana. And my mom was an artist she loves to paint. I use to be in a lot of things but the first thing I did that was music wise was playing the trumpet in middle school and stopped after 8th grade. I use to sing a lot but it was horrible sing but my mom uses to shine light onto those situations and say I should be an R&B singer. But I’ve never took recording serious till my sophomore year in high school back in 2016 when I’ve started listening closer to the lyrics of Tyler the creator’s mixtape bastard. He inspired me a lot cause I can relate to a lot of things he said personally even things that we have in common.
Mostly the fact that he has ADHD like me. I first started off producing on GarageBand mobile then dropped my first song “weird bastards” Freestyle late 2016 and a more serious follow up “Where my real friends at” same time that year. All throughout 2017 I dropped a series of ep’s and singles which lead to my first full-length mixtape “Laugh Now Cry Later” which had the hit single “You n I”. When I put “You n I” and “Cry Later” on iTunes and Spotify that’s where it took off and is now sitting at 6.6k streams on Spotify and 5.1k streams on iTunes. In 2019 I’ve dropped three mixtapes and two Ep’s that did well do to sells. Right now I have an ep coming out soon 3 songs produced by me and the other 3 produced by YouTubers.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t easy promoting myself out there hell I still have struggles. I just put out quality music and get a repost from rappers that are on the come up and get plays like that. Or just submitting my music on YouTube promotional channels.
Please tell us about your work.
It’s not necessarily a company nor group it’s more like a movement. But I have a thing called Drk Stars and it means dark rejected kings that turn into Stars. Cause I remember at one point I felt like I was a waste of space on this planet how people treated me with bullying, shit that goes on in my home with my parents always arguing and don’t understand my emotions. Me being a disrespectful piece of shit I am with my mom so I always get yeld at and beaten. I always get into trouble with my impulsive actions at school. Me getting into fights cause I quite do to my ADHD medicine and I’m skinny so everyone thinks I’m a punching bag. Me not been taken serious with people tryna date me etc.
I just want to show the youth especially kids that going to middle school and high schoolers that there not alone and can be anything they want if they put there mind and heart to it. Have faith yourself.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Since my dad was in the military and I never got to see him that much even though he ain’t do shit with me. I appreciate the fact that he was the station to South Korea and brought me and my mom out there. That has to be my hands-down favorite place I’ve been to.
