Meet Dalton Haynes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dalton Haynes.

Dalton, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Beauty has been my passion for as long as I can remember. It wouldn’t have been surprising to find me playing with family members hair from a very young age. Eventually, my mother and friends were calling me to help them style their hair for special occasions. Hairdressing has always come naturally to me. High school was much the same. In theater, I’d find myself backstage doing hair and makeup. As Senior year arrived, I was looking at colleges and career paths, not finding anything that I could see myself doing for the rest of my life. My interests are varied and I consider myself to be a fairly well-rounded guy. I always had a feeling that I would do something creative but didn’t know specifically what.
I decided to do hair while sitting in the kitchen at my Grandmother’s house talking with my Aunt. My cousins all seemed to have a plan for college and I worried that I’d be left behind. My Aunt looked at me and said, “Why don’t you go to school for hair? You already do it.” I remember thinking, “Wow, why on Earth didn’t I think of that?” I spoke to my parents about it, and after touring the school I wanted to attend – they were fully on board. I went to a prestigious beauty school that strongly emphasized hair as opposed to the other aspects of cosmetology. I was a dedicated student and the information came naturally to me. During my time at school, I realized doing hair is what I was meant to do. After graduation, I trained and worked at a couple of highly regarded salons where I had the chance to learn from some of the most brilliant minds in the industry. But I knew ultimately that I wanted to work for myself, so I started taking steps to do just that.
I was blessed with a huge opportunity to do a fashion show out of town that I felt under-qualified for, but I nervously accepted. I managed to impress the folks who hired me, and in turn, I started getting more job opportunities behind the scenes. I met wonderful colleagues and friends who recommended me to their associates. That’s really how Dalton Haynes Hairdressing started. It kind of fell into my lap and I went with it. I call my services concierge hair and beauty since I can cut, color, and style wherever my clients need me- Usually right in their own home. I think people enjoy not having to leave their house and still getting a high-quality salon service. My work is thoroughly rewarding, especially now that I’ve got it down to a science. October 2019 marks 10 years of making people feel beautiful as a professional. Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would evolve from chopping my best friend’s hair with kitchen sheers at 13 to telling the tale of the traveling hairdresser, but here I am.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Much like a painter, hairdressers could also be called struggling artists. The trick is figuring out how to make your art pay the bills. Like in any career, you’ll encounter personal trials as well as professional ones. The avenue to becoming a hairstylist is not an easy one. You often make little or no money for the first couple of years while you’re building a clientele. My art was a little different. Not having a salon space like most others, I had to improvise a way of bringing a level of fine hairdressing to people in their home, and I strive to do it well.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Dalton Haynes Hairdressing is a mobile salon company. I specialize in bringing fine salon service to the comfort of your own home or wherever you may be. I’ve forgotten how many photo shoots I’ve worked on, but I never forget the smile my clients have when they see their finished hair. I’m especially fond of my bridal work. If there is a need, I will always find a way to make the magic happen. When a job is too big or there are too many bridesmaids, I have a team of select pros I regularly work with to get the job done while preserving my standard of quality. As far as individual clients go, I’ve done house parties where we had eight friends having their hair done while enjoying some much-needed girl time and I have had appointments where I get to sit down and intimately learn all there is to know about my client so that I can exquisitely tailor their service. I’m set apart by bringing everything to you on your terms. My clients don’t have to dress up, stress out, or worry about a thing. I don’t mind if you have a glass of wine (or two) while catching up on some Netflix, or work on your laptop while I dust off your dead ends. My only requirement is that my clients love their hair, or my job isn’t done.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success is a twinkle in my client’s eye when they look in the mirror and love what’s looking back at them. When they smile at the details of their haircut or the color I painted through their hair and perk up like a kid on Christmas. Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than making someone feel beautiful.
