Meet Matt Feragne of The Orchid Luxury Flower Design in Hurst

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Feragne.

Matt, please tell us about The Orchid Luxury Flower Design – what should we know?
My company is not a typical flower shop, it’s a design company for wedding flowers. We specialize in creating custom arrangements with the highest quality flowers available. I can design an event for clients who have no idea what they want, or they can show me arrangements they like on the internet, or we can go through various types of flowers and color schemes to create something really unique for my clients.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s a rewarding road, I don’t know about smooth or easy. Being an entrepreneur is liberating but also has had its terrifying moments. When I was first starting out, I had worked $10/hour for every cent that I gambled for the chance to play this game. 9/10 businesses will fail. I had the full weight of that fact on my mind for months. Also, the highs and lows in income have been difficult. I have months where I make a bunch of sales and it’s like money is just pouring in and then I can have long dry periods that last months. There are a lot of drawbacks and responsibilities associated with owning a business (let alone two) but I really love what I do and would not want this any other way. I think a large part of my successes have been from the fact that my mother opened and runs a wedding venue that I have been working for sense I was like 13. I don’t work for her right now because I have my own stuff to run but I still am a little involved in it. Also, the legal stuff and the paperwork associated with running a business sucks. That being said though, making a living from flowers is something that still blows my mind thinking about. I “made it” as an artist. Many talented people never do, so it’s just really cool that I’m here where I am.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Creativity. Boldness. Knowledge.
