Today we’d like to introduce you to Tymarcus Ragland.
Tymarcus, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got into craft coffee when I was in college, and continued to grow in love with the craft when I returned to Dallas. Since 2015, I have worked in the coffee industry in various capacities from volunteering at local roasteries to working full-time as a barista. Beyond the coffee itself, I begin to appreciate the diverse community and ingenuity that coffee fostered among people.
As I begin to develop a desire to start my own coffeehouse, I started asking myself, “What can I do today?” This was pivotal for me because I didn’t have a lot of money (let’s be honest – any money lol), but I made up for it with a drive. I began doing my research and learning as much as I could from whoever I could, and that was how I arrived at roasting! That was something that I could do now. I kept working at, learning what I could, saving money, and buying things I would need little by little and before I knew it, I was up and running!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, but it has been worth the work. I’ve put in a lot of hours working extra jobs to save money for equipment and spending numerous hours crafting every piece of my business. I’ve found that some of the traditional means of securing capital aren’t easily accessible to everyone. I’m constantly reminding myself that one day I’ll be able to look back on my hard work and be proud of myself. I thought of those from similar financial backgrounds that would follow me who could find encouragement in my story, and of how impactful my future work will be for those who encounter it. All of these thoughts made the road, not smooth, but worth it.

Crown Coffee sources and roasts excellent specialty coffee. However, there is so much more to Crown Coffee than what’s in the cup. We are seriously concerned with the ambitions of those who hold the cup and utilize coffee to fuel their ingenuity. Thus, we exist to empower passions, equip expertise, and exemplify excellence in everything we set out to do. Our aim is to become the catalyst of virtuous work in our community and to link arms with fellow creatives and professionals who labor to ignite human flourishing.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started sooner! I can’t say I would have done anything differently. Everything that I have encountered thus far – successes and failures alike – have helped shape and teach me. I’ve learned that one of the essential characteristics of entrepreneurship is learning from and ENJOYING the journey. Everyone wants to be on top, and that’s great! I want to become the greatest coffee roasting company in the solar system. However, the top will expose you if you have not become the “kind” of person and businessperson you need to be to maintain at the top. Its called character and you gain that through the ups and downs of the journey.
