Today we’d like to introduce you to Mansur Plumber.
Mansur – please share your story with us.
With technology at its core, AdComp Systems has always stayed on the cutting edge of automation solutions. I founded the company in Queens New York, this was the time when Walkmans and VCRs and CRTs were abundant and PCs were running DOS and 14.4k modems, Compuserve was the internet and AOL was just about getting launched.
AdComp Systems started as a company that built white box computers and installed Novell networks and repaired PCs.
The company moved from a sublet bedroom and a garage in Queens to a 300 square ft. office a block away from Wall Street. Opportunities like converting thousands of CRT computer monitors from 110 to 220 volts for overseas markets, setting up call centers for sprint PCS, setting up phone systems for jewelry manufacturers and writing software for Chase Bank’s mortgage department were examples of projects that AdComp undertook along its journey. Our self funded company kept growing at every stage. Our founder & CEO was never afraid to take on a new challenge and execute them successfully.
Some paid of more than others. While helping a friend, build internet terminals for his new job, AdComp stumbled on an order to supply hardware and then later innovate on this box. This launched us into building self-service kiosks.
Like many entrepreneurs do, we of course made some bad decisions along the way that did not yield very high profit margins because we spent too much time supporting a very complicated hardware software product like DVD rental kiosks which could not stand up to the well-funded RedBox machines. So, we eventually sunset the entire product line and moved on to our core competency of building payment kiosks and payment software.
We started to build and provide hundreds of payment kiosks for companies like MetroPCS that are still being used.
We built additional products that can be sold to the same relationships with existing clients and prospects that are so unique that it would be hard for our prospects / clients to not adopt at least some of them, which gets our foot in the door for future sales to these companies.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our office was located a block away from the World Trade Center and I missed being under the Trade Center by 2 minutes as my train stopped a station away (City Hall) and as I exited to the street level from the station I saw both the buildings burning and people jumping from the top of the building. 9/11 disrupted the business and was the reason I moved to the Dallas area in 2001. I was very pleasantly surprised at the wonderful quality of life here in the Dallas area and decided to relaunch AdComp’s business in Dallas and to eventually make it the headquarters for our payment kiosk business which started to grow exponentially over the years.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I would love to spend my weekends with my Dad at his electronic shop, tinkering with circuit boards, tools, parts etc. It was my playground and I loved spending time there with him exploring the guts of electronic and mechanical products.
