Meet Trailblazer Jasmine Berry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Berry.

Jasmine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am currently working as a full-time social media manager with my business Spookieloo’s Consulting. The road here has been crazy interesting, eye-opening and amazing all at the same time. To be honest, this was not on my 5-year plan, but what fun is life if things don’t always go according to plan? Rewinding back six years ago, I was in college, at the University of Houston, feeding my love of fashion and writing with my blog. What truly sparked my interest was a meeting (a divine meeting at that) I had with a group named Houston Fashion Bloggers, a few of the members came to speak to my class about different fashion careers, including blogging-I was hooked!

After that meeting, I knew I had to start blogging, I wanted to share my personal style and the many facets of my life. Throughout my college career, I worked my ass off and made a self-proclaimed name for myself as a Plus Size Fashion Blogger. The opportunities and wonderful people I met, helped me to where I am now.

When I moved back home to Dallas, I stopped blogging for a while to figure out my life, like most if not all undergrads do. It was a particularly tough time because it was difficult finding a decent job, but for some reason, the universe is always watching out for me… I got a call from a blogger friend back in Houston who just wanted to check on me post-grad. I told her what was going on, and she said she’d let me know if anything came up. A couple of days pass and my blogger friend proposes that I do freelance social media management for a local non-profit based in Irving, TX. The non-profit was name Carter’s House and I had never managed another organization’s social media, let alone help them with their marketing.

After being connected with Carter’s House, I got connected with more businesses in Houston, Florida, Dallas and Washington D.C.! Fast-forward to now, I’m a full-time social media manager at an advertising agency and run my own business too. Yes, it’s a lot of work but I love it and couldn’t be more thankful.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not been smooth and it’s still not but from my learning experiences, I respond to difficult situations better. When I use to freelance, I would have a hard time saying no and putting my foot down when something wasn’t right with the client. What I suggest in the freelance world, is to always do a pre-client questionnaire. You want to find out if working with this client is going to be worth it and if they are serious about working with you. That goes for any service-based industry. The questionnaire can be a simple Word doc or a landing page on your website.

Now that working in social media/digital marketing is the norm, there are numerous resources to research. I strongly suggest figuring out your strengths and playing those up. Promote the hell out of yourself, learn and get certified in whatever you can; Facebook Ads, Google Analytics, etc. A lot of jobs are looking for some level of experience in this industry. And lastly, embrace change! Social media changes daily, there’s always a learning curve so just be open to learning more.

We’d love to hear more about Spookieloo’s Consulting.
I started out as a plus-size fashion blogger and now I’m a social media manager, content creator, micro-influencer, all of that! I truly enjoy sharing my personal style and story, as I’ve come to realize that we’re all similar in some way or another. My specialty is helping other businesses figure out their “story” and helping them create content centered around it. I take pride in seeing my clients feel at ease when it comes to using social media, as I believe it should enhance their business.

As a one-woman show (for now) I am proud of the work that I’ve put in and what I’ve learned along the way, maybe I’ll write a book on my experience one day…

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I started working at an early age, 14 years old to be exact. I did not grow up with a silver spoon in my hand but knew I had to work my butt off to get it. My work ethic is strong and I don’t mind doing what I need to do, to accomplish my goals. I think that’s where we get tripped up, we want life to happen fast for us but forget we have to go through certain processes to prepare us for the next level. Who knew I’d end up working in this industry? Just remember this: Do the work.
