Meet Susan Dixon of H&S Vinyl Dallas in Mesquite

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Dixon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Susan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My youngest daughter and I started crafting together a few years ago. We discovered there were no known HTV crafting stores around the south-east area of Dallas. My husband and I decided Mesquite would be a great location because it is centrally located.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. We’ve had many obstacles along the way. Even with good credit, we weren’t able to secure Bank/SBA funding due to our business being a new startup. We had many doors slammed in our faces. We had to resort to our 401K’s and refinancing our home. We’re constantly adding new inventory but lack of extra capital is the biggest challenge to most business owners. Many new business owners don’t have a clue about the true cost involved to start and run a business. Managing a retail store, keeping inventory, employees, vendors at times can be extremely stressful and time-consuming. Your duties don’t stop when you leave. It’s 24-7.

Please tell us about H&S Vinyl Dallas.
We’re a small Black-Owned Craft store. We sell blank tee-shirts, drinkware, Heat Transfer/Adhesive vinyl and other crafting supplies.

We cater to many customers that make and sell their own custom apparel and hobby products. We’re the proudest of our store because it’s family-owned and operated. H&S is not a big store but what sets us apart is the way we treat our customers. We assist and educate many new crafters. We personally take our time in person, by phone or via email. We love and treat our customers like family. Everyone is somebody when they enter H&S.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is my Mama hot combing my hair and the whole house smelling like hair grease and fried chicken.
