Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Thomas.
Isaac, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started drawing when I was in third grade. Comic books and cartoons were my introductions to the art world. I drew my version of the Transformers on notebook paper and created stories for each little cartoon. Fantasy worlds, space battles, action stories were the bulk of what I drew. I didn’t have a formal art class until high school and never visited a museum until college. Museums were fascinating places I didn’t know existed. University art classes exposed me to a world of art that excited and frustrated me. Art is a massive universe filled with wonder I share through teaching while still creating stories of my own. The influence of comics can be seen in a lot in my drawing. Today, I do work more abstractly but that depends on the mood I’m in and if I’m drawing inspiration from music, daydreams or life experience.
Has it been a smooth road?
I struggle with staying inspired and being satisfied with anything I’ve drawn. The artists I am influenced by most have work that is incredible. The concepts and craftsmanship are amazing and even though I work in slightly different media, I still compare myself to others when I probably shouldn’t.
Another challenge is finding time to make my own art. Working full time makes it difficult to come home, pick up the pen and create.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have paintings and drawings on canvas, paper and more recently I’ve been working on fabric. My work is probably best described as surrealistic and has been leaning toward a little more sculptural even though I’m not a sculptor.
The thing I’d say I’m most proud of is that one of the drawings I created was purchased from a gallery. Hopefully, more of my art will sell.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing I like most about Dallas is the opportunities to meet other artists. The museums and galleries in DFW are hubs for interacting with artists and those who appreciate art.
I grew up in the country so the part I like least about Dallas is all concrete and congestion. There are lots of people, especially on the highways and downtown. Open spaces, wooded areas and being in the serenity of the country energize me.

Enjoyed reading about Issac because I know his family. Proud to say that he grew up in east Texas. I identify with his wooded areas and open spaces because I grew up in the country also. This is my first time seeing any of his work.
