Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Monroe.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A few years ago, I realized I was spending so much time during the summers trying new restaurants and trying to experience a specific type of dining moment. As a teacher, the summer provides to me an excellent opportunity to explore Dallas eats and what our city has to offer besides the typical fancy pants stuff. So, I began exploring local eateries.
I also have a passion for cooking and trying new recipes, so I also include dishes that I cook that I find super tasty and easy to make. I didn’t want to be one of those Foodstagrams that constantly posts, is constantly out, and constantly looking for a new place. I wanted to be more laid back and discerning about what I was sharing.
Because of that choice, I don’t have as many posts as other food blogs, but what I have been able to curate is a list of restaurants that I would recommend to anyone. Especially those of us who prefer a more “quick service” experience. The recipes that I feature as part of my home cooking try to incorporate flavors and colors that I’m not familiar with.
Cooking, sharing a drink, a laugh, a dish, should be one of those things that we get to celebrate as a community. My approach is low-stakes. You’re not going to find too many places that you have to wear a tie to, but every now and then you might. My focus and my drive with my Foodstagram is really to encourage people to have a good bite to eat at a place with a chill atmosphere.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well curating a following is difficult, especially because I’m not posting daily or weekly. Not everything I eat is worthy of a shout out. So, I work hard to be discerning, I treat it as a hobby on the side and less of a pressure situation.
Overall, the struggles have just to gain more followers and spread my reach. I’ve considered purchasing ads, but it doesn’t feel true to the more organic approach I’ve been fostering.
Please tell us about Serving Dallas Dishes.
Serving Dallas Dishes is a Foodblog that focuses on quick-service restaurants that have good atmospheres. I also like to explore different home recipes and share successes with new and exciting flavors.
I am most proud of the home cooking features I’ve put out lately. What sets me apart from other foodblogs is the frequency of posts, most food blogs stay posting food. I’m only doing the posts if I found the vibe, the food, and service to be top of the charts.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory has to be spending time with my Grandmother. She taught me how to cook, how to sew, how to speak properly. To say that she was the biggest influence in my life would be an understatement. I celebrate every memory that I have with her and cherish all the times she pops into my memory for no reason.
