Meet Julia Sanabia of HoneyBrow in New Braunfels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Sanabia.

Julia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began working when I was 13 years old, under the table for my family’s snow cone business. I become the “manager” at 16 and continued working for another year until they realized seasonal meant seasonal. Who knew that experience would come in handy over 13 years later. After graduating high school and coming to the decision that school just wasn’t for me, my childhood dreams of becoming a teacher would be null and void, so I went for the next best thing- daycare! It wasn’t all that bad, some days worse than others, not something I dreamed of doing for the rest of my life. I quit after three wrinkle inducing years and ironically became a mother shortly after- I was truly grateful for the experience and patience I acquired after working there.

Watching my child grow was lovely but staying home, doing what felt like the same thing every day, made me stir crazy. I picked up my old DSLR and slapped “photographer” on my resume- it was short-lived because the editing process afterward was a drag. What’s next? I thought. I’m a pretty good baker- let me sell cupcakes! And deliver them!” Just reading that over is exhausting. The mess in the kitchen after an order made every order annoy me. That’s not how it should work, right? Of course, I quit. It wasn’t until one evening while judging some celebrities browse online (a favorite past time of mine) I thought “I’ll do that.

I’ll do eyebrows.” I’ll never have to worry about it being a “seasonal” thing, I don’t have to deal with other people’s kids, no grueling editing process and I get to stay out of a messy kitchen. So, I touched up my threading skills by watching how-to videos on YouTube, borrowed my husband’s legs for threading practice, thought of a clever name and created an Instagram. I went from threading in my mom’s living room to microblading in my own salon suite, to owning my own bigger unit in a cool building near downtown with 3 other girls working with me. I also began training this summer and realized that I’m living my dream and finally teaching! Its exciting how things come full circle when you work hard and stay positive.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, but that’s what keeps it exciting. The fact that every brow I create is an art form, when I first started, like with anything, I was a little rusty and naturally would be hard on myself. Owning your own business is the hardest path you can take, as well, but believing that you are strong and capable is important and something that takes practice and patience. I still run into struggles but I pride myself on staying focused on the big picture. It’s all worth it a million times over!

HoneyBrow – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in eyebrows- threading and microblading, specifically feather brows. It’s a semi-permanent eyebrow enhancement where I use a manual microblade tool and carefully etch super-thin hairlike strokes into the brow area to add volume, definition, and shape to create perfectly balanced brows for each client. We also offer lash services and other permanent cosmetics (lip blush and eyeliner) I’m most proud of the team of empowering women I have chosen to ride with me on this journey and the genuine connections we make with the women who choose us to provide their beauty services.

I’ve always been one of those people that loves gifting more than receiving gifts, so when I established my steady clientele, I chose to give back with my “Pay with a Smile” sessions where I provide free feather brows to people who have lost their eyebrows and confidence due to chemotherapy. I also do pretty awesome giveaways where the entry is only valid with self-love proclamations. It’s my thing 😉

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is defined by reaching that ultimate sweet spot in your life where work doesn’t feel like work and stressful situations that are inevitable are easily avoidable by looking on the bright side. Success is also, always being able to find that bright side!
