Conversations with the Inspiring Failyn Lindsey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Failyn Lindsey.

Failyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have a retail background but real estate was in my household. I originally wanted to go to school for fashion buying and merchandising. My stepdad is a real estate Broker now but when I was younger, I saw his journey through real estate school; times of feast and famine, being excited by deals and being disappointed (sometimes all in the same transaction). I knew I didn’t want a desk job so this excited me! I worked at a personal injury law firm in Memphis, TN and multiple retail jobs. I was first licensed in real estate in Tennessee but I worked more on the property management side with investors. I didn’t put my real estate license to use as a buyer’s or seller’s agent but I did close a deal or two. It just was not consistent, yet it was enough to pique my interest. My retail background definitely has aided in me providing a customer service aspect to my real estate business. Fast forward to me relocating to Dallas from Memphis, TN, I worked as a Store Manager for a women’s clothing store and when the brick and mortar stores shut their doors, it was my chance to get my Texas real estate license.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has NOT been a smooth ride but everyone’s journey is different. I think sometimes we make things more difficult than they have to be if we get out of our own way. Beginning a real estate career is EXPENSIVE. Set “SMART” goals for yourself to manage your day to day routine and to assist in reaching your goals. Find a mentor. They are more important than you may think. There will be learning curves, as there is with anything, but all things can be conquered.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m most confident as a buyer’s agent. I specialize in listening to a buyer’s needs and finding it. It’s about managing expectations. Sometimes, you have to level-set with your client. I think my customer service background has allowed me to execute that seamlessly. My clients appreciate my honesty. I’m also an agent that can work with clients with modest budgets to almost endless bank accounts. I know real estate but I understand people.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
When seeking a mentor, find someone who will challenge you. Find one (or two) that reflects how you see your future self. It will be easier to take advice and guidance from them because you see yourself in them. If you choose a mentor that hasn’t surpassed how you envision your success, you will be less engaged and willing to listen. The same goes for a mentor that you feel is too “grand”. You will feel intimidated and not perform to your maximum potential because you will feel judged and insecure. I’ve found that this has worked for me and it makes your road to success a little more smooth. It could still be a windy road BUT smooth.
