Meet EJ McCoy of Chorbie in Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to EJ McCoy.

At the age of eight, EJ McCoy began mowing his neighbors’ lawns in Allen. By the age of 21, he incorporated EJ McCoy Enterprises LLC in 2006 and established Emerald Lawn Care. Twenty-five years later, some of those childhood clients are still loyal customers – a testament to EJ’s dedication to quality service.

In 2015, EJ partnered with Josh Cahill to expand Emerald Lawn Care’s vision and services to include lawn fertilization, weed control, and residential pest control services. It was at this point, the name Emerald Lawn Care became too ambiguous to EJ’s mission, and so, the company changed its name to Weed Xtinguishers.

By 2019, Weed Xtinguishers had expanded its service offerings to offer a host of home services, including (but not limited to) landscaping, sprinkler repair, fence repair, window washing, termite control, and Christmas lights. It became clear that Weed Xtinguishers was no longer a lawn care company. This small business was a home services business. Equipped with a fresh vision and hope for the future, EJ started Chorbie with a mission to conveniently add value and comfort to properties all over the Metroplex.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to profitability was not a smooth road for EJ McCoy. In the Metroplex, it is easy to get enough lawn care clients to keep one busy for a week. It’s hard to expand that business to service thousands of homes. Some of the most significant challenges include: finding qualified and legal workers, balancing work schedules, handling customer service, and having to provide consistent service in the harsh Texas climate consistently. The key to conquering all of these challenges is to change the way you work regularly. This and a steadfast commitment to customer satisfaction are two things EJ credits to his success.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Chorbie – what should we know?
The idea behind Chorbie is not unique. There are other services, like Tackl and The Good Contractor List, who provide home services to the general public. The difference between Chorbie and its competitors is that Chorbie wants to be a one-stop-shop for every home service need. With its competitors, a homeowner is using their service to hire a contractor. With Chorbie, a homeowner is working directly with a company that can provide a host of services. And while Chorbie may use a contractor to help with some work, Chorbie is the point of contact for every service. Chorbie takes care of everything from start to finish.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Chorbie’s success is built on the principle that we want to partner with a homeowner. In other words, we don’t want to be seen just as a service provider. We want all of our clients to feel like we care about their situation. We also want them to know that we committed to them, especially in the cases where we mess up. That’s why we say, “If you’re not happy, we’ll make it right.”
