Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Gonzalez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I’ve always been an artistic person who loves to learn new things. My mom was my biggest influence in life and I learned lots of my creativity from her.
What got me into this industry was just my passion for hair, which started by watching my mom work her magic. Growing up, I admired her work so I would always find myself looking up YouTube videos on how to style and color hair while in high school, and I used to practice it a lot on myself and friends. After graduating, I pursued my career in the hair industry by starting out in barber school then on to cosmetology school.
For the past two and a half years, I’ve been running my own business independently. As much as I enjoyed the Barbershop life, I enjoy working for myself so much more. Learning all of life lessons one day at a time, I continue to perfect my craft every day. Although it hasn’t been easy, I wouldn’t trade my job for anything in this world.
Being able to change someone’s life with just a haircut is what drives me to keep going. My clients inspire me to be greater and achieve all that I possibly can in life.
My main goal is to eventually open up my own shop and leave a legacy behind for my future and make a positive impact in this industry.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Chasing the dream definitely hasn’t been easy. Some of the struggles I faced along the way all taught me valuable lessons and I wouldn’t be who I am today without them. Especially starting out on your own, being able to hold down the fort by yourself is hard. Learning to ask for help when I need it was my biggest task. Being independent, you become prideful to the point in which you want to say “I did it on my own” but that’s not always the case.
Allowing my friends and family to guide me on the right path with advice and support is what helped me the most. Its always good to have a good support system on your side to back you up in times of need.
We’d love to hear more about The Gallery Barber.
For the past seven years, I’ve been working in the hair industry as a stylist, but in the past four years, I’ve dedicated myself to the barber industry.
I’ve managed to mix my artistic skills with a passion for cutting hair. I’ve grown to appreciate the natural fall of hair and I continue to learn new techniques to improve certain styles I’m known for. Most of my clients come to me with concerns about their hair, so I do my best to help them figure out what works for them. I always try to educate my clients on how they can recreate the styles at home with great quality products and showing them tips on blow-drying.
I believe what sets me apart is my style and techniques. I love doing Transformation Haircuts and posting them on social media. Being able to transform someone with just a haircut is one of my greatest talents.
Best way to describe my shop is a cool tropical kinda vibe. I love palm trees, sunsets, and neon pink! I was blessed to find a neon pink and white barber chair which is my shop staple. I love art and dreamt of having my own gallery, hence the name. Throughout the years I’ve collected cool art pieces that I rotate on and off my walls. Clients love spotting new things in my shop!
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Most important piece of advice is to never give up. Remember what your goals are and keep your head up. It will not be easy, but so worth it in the end. Stay positive!
Keep a journal and take notes and track your progress. It helps when you’re halfway through the year and see how much has changed.
Stay organized! Don’t lose focus on the main priorities. Even though you get busy working 24/7 on your new career, set time aside for yourself.
Family and friends are the best support system, don’t be afraid to ask for help! Networking also helps advance in the industry you’re pursuing.
