Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Macias.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I didn’t always know I wanted to be a hairdresser. But, growing up, I collected magazines and hair was always the first thing I looked at. Having curly hair, I tried anything and everything to change that, which led me to experiment with different styles. One day, when I was going through a challenging time in my life, my best friend (and now, business partner) had a “come-to-Jesus” talk with me and encouraged me to enroll in Cosmetology school. I began my career at Drybar and the knowledge of styling that I gained while there has helped so much throughout my career. Not long after, I joined The Ritz Carlton salon, where my career has really flourished and has taught me not only the importance of customer service but also how to provide an experience for my clients while building lasting relationships.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest struggle has been managing my work/life balance. Having a family and working in an industry that can have such an unstructured schedule and, also, requires me to travel can be extremely challenging. But, I have a great partner and support system that make it much easier. I have learned that living a healthy lifestyle and self-care are paramount. Dedicating time to your mental and physical health is key to achieving and maintaining success in this industry.
Please tell us about your work.
Throughout my career, I had always been interested in learning everything from hair to makeup to nails; I never wanted to limit myself to one thing. But, two years ago, I broke up with my hot tools and began to embrace my curly hair which, then, inspired me to learn how to care for my curls and really understand what they were always in need of. My personal curly hair journey turned out to be such a blessing because it helped me find my passion for helping others in their own curly hair journey.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I wish I had the time to enjoy a good book or podcast, but what helps me do my best are my friends, family, and my awesome clients! I give credit to these special people for playing a huge part in this life that I’ve been blessed with!
