Meet Jennifer and Robert Bontreger of Southern Horizon Healthcare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer and Robert Bontreger.

Jennifer and Robert, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We met at medical school and after 6 months of dating, we ended up eloping in December 1999.

We both trained in the New City Area, Robert in Emergency Medicine at St. Barnabas Hospital and Jennifer at Beth Israel Medical Center in Internal Medicine. Jennifer later completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine while Robert was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia to complete his commitment to the Army. We moved to the Dallas area after Jennifer found out that her father was listed on the lung transplant list back in 2010. We both have worked in Corporate Medicine where catch phrases like “Quality Care” is used to attract patients, but there is little to no follow through to prove quality care is given, especially when you are told as the provider that you need to see more patients, which leads to less time with patients. We found that we do more paperwork which leads to more time at the office and trying to balance personal and professional life and commitments.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. There are things about business that are never taught. There are people and businesses always wanting to do business with you, but sifting through what they have to offer and how it would benefit our business and patients has not always been straightforward, the medical climate, which has been unstable, has also lent itself to.

Having an individual medical business nowadays in the current environment where large hospital organizations are buying up medical groups and making medicine more corporate and impersonal, places us in the minority. Businesses like us have to go back to the roots of medicine in one way or another, while developing “new” business models.

By offering new services that are not typical to a traditional internal medicine practice and collaborating with various companies to keep costs down to make the patient feel like a person and not a number, we feel that we have more to offer.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a medical practice that specialized in internal and sports medicine. We see patients ages 12 and up. We offer your usual treatment and care that an internal medicine office offers such as treatment of diabetes, hypertension along with treatment of bronchitis, COPD, and other various health conditions , but will perform IV hydration if needed, along with suture placement for lacerations, abscess drainage, biopsies of small to medium dermatologic lesions, routine and problem based gynecologic exams, male hormone replacement, (minus pellet placement at this time) weight loss, concussion management, along with performing pulmonary function testing when warranted. We are also looking to add other in office services like onsite allergy testing soon.

Jennifer is one of the team physicians for Lewisville High School and does assist with other area high schools with their concussed and injured athletes.

Our company does offer aesthetic services which includes laser hair reduction, photofacials, along with botox, chemical peels and facials in which the staff has been certified to perform. We sell medical grade skin care, ZO by Obagi and PCA skincare.

We have been working on a model that is similar to Direct Primary Care, only we do not see children. This model allows for people to have access to medical care at a low monthly cost and allows the members to have access to the doctor, 24/7, whether it be through email, facetime, direct cell phone access, etc. We also have agreements with local and various companies to offer cash pricing for our patients who do not have insurance or whose deductible is high. We feel that this model with all we have to offer will allow for our patients to have a variety of services in one place and give patients the feel that we do care about their health and wellbeing. It also allows us to have more time with each patient.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, absolutely. We believe Texas allows for small businesses like ours to start up and grow as they do not look to overtax and welcome business growth here. We were lucky that things fell into place and we landed into the Dallas area as the last 7 years have proven to a great time and area to start our business. We look forward to continued business growth and to serve our community and other nearby local communities.

Dr. Bontreger and her staff are simply amazing! Best ever! I moved away from Texas a year ago and still fly back for my doctor visits. They are that good!
