Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Lopez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marcus. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an artist. I studied painting in college and after college went on to study film. The visual language is the medium that I love. Working in film allowed me to use my visual skills of color and composition. Movies are much different than painting though. It’s a creative collaboration with others, from actors to makeup artists to the lighting crew. Working in that type of creative community is part of my work now that I really enjoy. I can have a vision for a project but I work alongside other minds who are adding their own wonderful skills and ideas to the process. Getting back to my journey, after graduate film school I worked in film production in the Austin area. I also started working in corporate media production shooting videos for litigation attorneys. It was during those long workdays that I started picking up a still camera. I wanted to compose again. Instead of the original canvas that I used to paint on, I wanted to use a camera to capture moments of sunlight, splashes of brilliant color and the beautiful faces of other artists. That was the starting point of my latest chapter of being a photographer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road?? I don’t believe life is ever that smooth. Challenges always come up. Hopefully, we learn and grow from them. The biggest challenge that has faced me as a working artist is the ups and downs of your professional work. Since doing film production, I’ve always worked as contract hire. Those days, you could work on a film project for three to four months, then have a dead time of no work. While I worked with attorneys, I might be on a trial for weeks then also have a slow time after until the next case. Now, as a working photographer, I also have slow months and other times that I’m swamped. So, trying to keep a good business head about you while maintaining your creative spirit has always been my biggest balancing act!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Marcus Lopez Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Marcus Lopez Photography is my company. I shoot a wide range of subjects and clients. I have super clients in the design district of Dallas who have amazing showrooms of high-end antiques and art, I often create images for them to help market their products online. I have many families that I have worked with to create lasting portraits. I photograph headshots of the small business owner to corporative executives. Working with local fashion designers and stylists allows me to showcase their work. I’ve done fashion line shoots as well as creative images for their online sites. I always want to create a great image for the client… exactly what they might be envisioning, but I also what them to see something new & wonderful. A beautiful image that they might not have imagined!
