Today we’d like to introduce you to Zubair Awan.
Zubair, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Pakistan and done my schooling in Pakistan, Rawalpindi in 1999, my family moved to UAE and we were there for 16 years, still I always feel something missing tried several jobs but nothing works for me got married and blessed with a baby boy in 2010, life was steady but still it wasn’t going the way I want as working overtime, doing my best but still no appreciation no bonus always felt low and discouraged, but my heart always say it’s not the end, you have to move on you can do it, you have to do it, my wife was side by side with me in every decision, and that day, we made that decision we will go to USA, we were not sure what we will do over there but we have this faith and believe that we will succeed no matter what, we need our boy to be in country where he can have good education and choices of doing things according to his potential. I came from UAE to States with my wife and son, four years ago! To follow our American dream, we have to start with something somewhere and got a chance to buy a running business to start our journey. That’s how we started with Backstage florist and gift. This was not just a business for us it is life, we were all depending on this and that time that business was not in good shape! I didn’t have any background with flowers or plants besides I was into sales and marketing. Just started everything from processing and cleaning and dealing with customers, and learn everything as quickly as I can and ended up doing designing and now, I’m the person that handles everything at the shop, manage and work at my shop, took me three years to be at this place. People says why you choose flowers? I say I have face hardship to establish my self and still working hard to reach the certain level, I know how hard the time was for us, but when we deliver flowers and we see smile on people faces that makes us feel happy all stress goes away, when they get their flowers, that smile on there faces says it all, that I am at the right job. Bringing smile in people’s life that’s what we do at Backstage florist and gifts, to make someone’s day special!! And will continue.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were loads of things from traveling from one country to other totally different countries as we were unaware of the area, lifestyle and communication, and when we bought this business we were not familiar with flowers business so we were depending on our employees, and once you depend on someone you know, it’s hard as things work the way they want not what you want or do! We invested a lot, it was hard, work day and night to learn the things one and two! Establish the business once again was hard.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Backstage florist and gifts – what should we know?
We do all kinds of floral arrangements from compact to high styles, traditional and modern styles,
we do weddings, bridal bouquets, bridesmaids, etc. Boutineers and wrist and pin on corsages for homecoming!
all kinds of funeral work, like standing spray easels, arrangements sets on caskets, wreaths and cross easels,
we carry and do plants to mostly indoor plants like spathyphyllum, corotons, English ivy, we also carry blooming plants like Kalanchoe, Azaleas and Bromaliade and etc.
It’s a family own business, me my wife and family work together and we care about our customers as we feel them as a family too more than a customer and so we carefully listen to there choices and theme they want, we also give and suggest things which can be appropriate for the occasion if they are having trouble makeup there mind, we help them in selecting the arrangement, and make it special for them that they always come back to us as they have trust, because we care for the money they spending every penny every dime is important and it is earned through hard work, that’s why people like us and remember Backstage florist and gift as their go-to florist.

My sister Nadia, and brother in law Mahmood helped us a lot too during our struggles at the beginning with transportation and etc. My wife Aqsa, was the person I feel lucky I found her and have her in my life, she stood side by side with me in every situation and always motivated me, she is playing an important role as she do coursages, boutonnieres and bridal bouquets and also helps in deals at front desk, when I am working at back with designs. My Dad Khalid is also helped with his managerial skills and determination. We are a team, we are family, we are Backstage florist and gifts. 🙂
