Today we’d like to introduce you to Krishawn Johnson.
Krishawn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While I was in college for Accounting, I decided that I wanted to have some accounting experience to list on my resume, so I started working at a local tax office in New Orleans.
I quickly moved up to a supervisory position. During my second year working there, I completed college and started working at a CPA firm in Downtown New Orleans. I also worked seasonally in the evenings at the tax office. One night an elderly lady came in to have her taxes prepared. Her refund was only $900 but she wanted to receive the rapid refund at a cost of over $300 because her grandchild needed pampers. I called my boss to see if we could adjust the fees and he immediately said no. I decided to give her cash to purchase food and pampers and explained to her that I could file her taxes via mail for free but it would take a little bit longer. She cried and agreed to go with this option.
That night I realized that most tax offices don’t care about the community that they are in, they just care about the revenue. So I decided that I wanted to open a tax office that is affordable and offers the quality of a CPA’s office. At Krissy’ s Kwik Tax, we educate our clients about tax deductions and how to ensure a tax refund or a lower tax bill at the end of the year. We adjust fees if need be, we have a homely look to our offices to make you feel at home. But most importantly WE GIVE BACK!
I started my franchise by printing cards and flyers, on my lunch break at the CPA’s office, I would pass out flyers on Canal Street. After work and on the weekends, I would go door to door and to grocery stores giving out flyers. My 1st year I had family, friends, and about 50 new clients….17 years later I have thousands of clients nationwide.
As far as giving back, we give away $500 monthly to our clients. We also cook and feed the homeless, have toy drives, and I travel to other countries to help with disaster relief efforts.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has definitely been a hard road for me. I divorced and moved to Texas in 2004, which caused me to have to start all over, this time without the support system of family being around. I was now a single mother of 4 girls in a City that I knew no one in.
But I worked fulltime as an accountant, started my tax business from home, and eventually got in touch with my prior clients so I could prepare their taxes again as well.
Being an entrepreneur and working full-time is considered a conflict of interest to most companies. So, it left me with recruiters asking me to lie on my resume or risk not being hired……I decided to just risk it.
There were plenty of struggles…. Katrina hit in 2005, I endured a workplace EEOC situation, I had a daughter that attempted suicide due to bullying, I have picked bad locations / managers to open offices with…. but through it all I prayed and believed that God was guiding me right where he wanted me to be.
On top of the current struggles, I had to fight through the struggles of being a teen parent trying to break the cycle as a single mom of 4 daughters.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Krissy’s Kwik Tax story. Tell us more about the business.
KRISSY’S KWIK TAX has been in business since 2000. We offer bookkeeping, payroll, personal and business tax prep/filing, audit assistance, tax forgiveness, missing money locator and franchise opportunities.
I am known as the Tax Lady….my clients are fortunate to have an actual accountant in their corner instead of just a tax preparer that passed a 3 week course. I am a degreed accountant at their service. They leave my office educated so they can make better financial decisions.
As stated earlier, I am very proud of the fact that we give back. I think the fact that I care about the community is something that sets me apart from other offices.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck……none
God….ALL!!!
It’s hard work, I grind very hard during tax season. Now my ‘tax season’ is almost year long. God gives me the strength and courage to get it done.
