Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Hulen.
Jason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started personal training after I graduated from Austin College as a football player and track athlete and receiving my Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Sports Science in 1999.
During my Education (student teaching) classes at Austin College, I realized how many coaches really didn’t know what was going on inside of the body or about the angles outside of the body and conditioning the body to adapt properly. So, I went to grad school at Texas Tech University to get my Masters of Science in Physiology and Biomechanics/ Scientific Basis of Exercise and Physical Education.
I had a personal training business in Lubbock and in Dallas before I received a position at the Baylor Tom Landry Fitness Center at Baylor hospital. There, I lectured for the Strength and Conditioning Association at symposiums at The Baylor Tom Landry Fitness Center on subjects like speed development and articulation manipulation and conditioning issues.
At that time, I found a niche in the high-rise buildings around the area of uptown, which was just starting to be developed, and thrived offering personal training and fitness groups to property management systems around the metroplex.
I went into sales after the crash hit because property management did not have the funds for amenities and the budgets dropped for construction on new buildings as well, so the personal training and multi-family buildings were not as successful at that time.
I became a fitness director at a country club in Dallas and worked through the country club circuit, training tennis players and golfers for speed and agility and strength and conditioning. I also lectured for Smu‘s wellness program about spinal surgeries and preventative and post-rehabilitation training and conditioning.
After a stint in sales and management, I have returned to the industry as the high-rise business is booming. Offering, speed development, strength and conditioning, group sports-specific training for athletes. Having the high-rise business has been great for me. I feel wiser having been in this industry for almost 20 years now.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The struggles along the way were definitely trying to maintain a marriage and run a business when the business model failed during the residential crash. Bouncing back makes it feel that much better after finding my path again in the industry and having my own goals in life.
Please tell us about Hulen Health & Fitness.
What sets Hulen Health and Fitness apart from other personal training companies is that we cater to each individual and have certified and professional individuals that can cater to special populations and have the experience of my 20 years in the industry as well as five other trainers that have a combined 80 years of experience in the fitness and/or strength coaching fields.
Speed development is a specialty of mine for athletes around the metroplex that are planning for combines or taking it to the next level. I find the holes in their program, whether it be balance on one leg or stride length or power off of 1 foot or upper body or core issues. Then, their test times and performance on their playing fields improved vastly.
Helping those in high-rise neighborhoods come together as a neighborhood and helping kids of all ages as well as adults after issues like cancer, myocardial infarction, or back surgery have all been rewarding as well.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over, I would’ve stuck to my path and my goals and my passion in life and not try to go by what others thought or assumed about the future of my goals and stuck to the process. I would’ve been successful a whole lot earlier.
