Conversations with the Inspiring Aisha Chatman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aisha Chatman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After experiencing cystic acne and having oily skin breakouts around my junior year in high school, I began to seek professional care for my skin, changing my eating habits, and developing an at-home skincare regimen. Around this time, I also began to develop a deeper interest in makeup, experimenting with different eyeshadow and lip colors of both neutral and bold. I would also create looks on old childhood dolls, my grandmother and my mom. Researching the latest trends and application techniques I took interest in perfecting the craft of makeup. My passion for skincare and makeup along with telling other women how they can improve their skin is what initially piqued my interest in attending Esthetics School. People who were around me during those “breakout” years can tell you my skin has done a complete turn around for the better!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My advice is, if something is your true passion, then pursue it. If it’s on your mind constantly, it’s there for a reason. Surround yourself with positive influence, and others who are in the direction you are trying to get. It’s okay if others do not see or understand YOUR vision. Remember the vision was given to YOU and not THEM.
My journey was not simple it was overwhelming. Many days, I seriously thought about dropping feeling overwhelmed attending school full time, working/work responsibilities, and of course, “mommy-duties” of a small toddler don’t stop. There were plenty of late nights studying, homework, projects, in conjunction with “life” responsibilities. However, through everything, I remained focused and pushed through it. Started the Esthetics program Winter 2018 and completed Summer 2019, Those months seemed forever during certain times, but I’m able to say I DID IT!

What should we know about Skinnanigans? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My page is a display of all things SKIN related as well as my journey in school. You will mainly see skincare tips, videos of my work, different makeup looks and some waxing. Eventually, I would like to expand into more brow techniques.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I feel the beauty industry is very “cut-throat”. There is a lot of competition, I feel the main obstacles are instead of working together, helping to build each other up, It’s more competitive to see who can get their “first”. There is enough out in the world for everyone to get a “slice of pie”. At the end of the day, everyone wants to win and everyone has their niche. If someone seeks advice from you because they admire your style, work ethic, how you market or what your brand has to offer, it does not mean they are trying to take away from you or “steal ideas”. It’s probably more of them seeking advice about how they can perfect their level of achievement.
