Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Sanders.
Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Sanders Counseling story began with wanting to help people who are struggling with relationships. This evolved over the years and while in college, taking psychology classes, I found my path as a counselor. I was drawn to the research of psychology and people’s personalities and the pain we experience in life. During my studies for mental health and marriage counseling, I recognized there are so many different approaches such as Gottman method and cognitive behavioral therapy to help individuals and families understand themselves.
After working as a counselor in agencies in California and Texas, my passion for serving diverse populations lead me to private practice. I find it rewarding being a self-employed therapist, which is the best route for my clients, to customize their therapeutic needs including anxiety, signs of depression, marital related concerns.
My business and belief is modeled around the individual needs of my clients and not a one size fits all therapy approach.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path to private practice has been both a welcome and bumpy road. I have enjoyed every agency I have worked with, every client I have learned from, and every challenge I have been faced with because I learned how to be a better version of myself and therapist for my clients and business.
In business, one of the top challenges over the years has been geographical. My largest move being from California to Texas in 2012. After working at a wonderful agency in North Texas, I then transitioned again to the perfect private practice for me more centrally located in the DFW Metroplex. Rebuilding my client base and referent base three different times is a challenge in itself. Creating cost-effective business strategies to benefit both my niche market and my business is an ongoing challenge.
Throughout these moves and years in practice, my passion and expertise became more specific with support for relational and family dynamics. A lifelong love of learning creates its own challenges in narrowing down the decision of specialized trainings to attend and ways to integrate these tools for my clients.
My therapeutic focus is counseling couples who are struggling with communication, adolescents wanting to express their feelings, and families in high conflict from divorce, separation or betrayal to manage their overwhelmed state.
Please tell us about Sanders Counseling – what should we know?
Counseling in California and transitioning to private practice in Texas, I focused on developing my practice to help people understand their family dynamics and relationships. My passion is empowering couples with high conflict and communication struggles to work towards balance in their relationship. I am known to express ideas with the mindset of suggesting and encouraging. I am sensitive in dealing with conflict and helping people understand and express their feelings.
Couples that come to my office are stressed out and struggling with communication skills, trust, betrayal and connection concerns. Adolescents that I see in the office, 12 years old and older, struggle with self-esteem, anxiety, depression and family relationships. I work with adults and high conflict families co-parenting through divorce/separation. With every client, I meet them where they are emotionally ready to start and focus on the goals they want to meet. I am there to assist in clearing the path so they can achieve their goals.
In the business I have built, I am proud of my clients for choosing to return to sessions and open themselves up to the vulnerability of healing. I am proud of myself for starting a private practice and developing my niche in the dynamics of relationships. I am thankful that the majority of my referrals now come from clients and other professionals in the DFW Metroplex.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Commitment has been a strong quality that has helped me persevere in developing my business. I have experienced success and challenges and have continued to be consistent with setting goals, asking questions, and stating what I need in order to be the best version of myself. I have focused on setting my clients up for success, even during their own questioning of the process, by giving unwavering support, listening and answering their questions, and assisting them to find their truth.
