Meet Shannon Kouser of Connect to Thrive in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Kouser.

Shannon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was completing my undergraduate internship at a youth transition center when I realized I wanted to be a counselor. I’ve taught life skills classes and worked in a coaching role for youth aging out of foster care. I spent time in graduate school working in an eating disorder program and interned at the Resource Center. I transitioned to full-time private practice this past summer.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The greatest opportunities and largest challenges of counseling are both found in a variety of ways to use your skills. I’m grateful for the opportunities I had to grow through internships and jobs in community mental health practice, hospital, non-profit, and private practice settings. It has been a pretty smooth road navigating and exploring the options. The most challenging part for me has been choosing where I find the most joy.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I work at Connect to Thrive in Plano. I see teens, adults, and couples. I specialize in eating disorders, trauma, and anxiety. I am most proud of the different ways we work to meet our clients. We are all always exploring ways to best serve each client as they walk through our doors. I am currently in the process of EMDR and RYT 200 Psychotherapeutic trainings. We believe in the power of these additional trainings and modalities as a way to best serve and connect with clients.

What were you like growing up?
I have always been on the go. Growing up, I was involved in dance, tae kwon do, and many other activities. I loved school and would describe myself as a lifelong learner. I’ve always preferred reading to television or video games. I have always enjoyed exploring new places and meeting new people.
