Meet Kevin Nguyen of KevinNPhotograghy in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Nguyen.

Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I didn’t start out doing photography at a young age like a lot of people have. I actually got into photography late in high school, during a time where I was a dancer and dance was my main form of creative expression. Photography was more of a side hobby and I never thought I would take it seriously until I suffered an injury that put a halt to my dancing for a few years. While I was recovering from my injury, my family friend, a photographer for more than two decades, invited me to help him with shoots at random concerts or random events around Dallas, and I absolutely fell in love with it and bought my first DSLR soon after.

A few years passed by and during this time, I photographed mostly friends and family and never really thought about reaching out to models to shoot for them. Gradually, people would just ask me to shoot for them, and I started to realize the more I shot with new people, the more photography was becoming something I really loved. To this day, I have collaborated and will continue to collaborate with many other photographers that share a common passion, all of which add to keep my love for photography still strong!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
If photography was a smooth road, then I wouldn’t be where I am today, it shaped me and made me grow as a photographer. One of my biggest struggles I’ve dealt with is creative ruts/mental blocks, they’re honestly the worse for me, days would go by without me making progress, I would just be so frustrated. Cliché, as it sounds but taking a step away from everything and smelling the roses, then coming back to it with a fresh mind and a go with a flow attitude, helps overcome my mental blocks. Another way I’ve actually dealt with this is by working or talking with other photographers really helps too, it really puts me in a more open-minded mentality and it can eye-opening at times.

KevinNPhotograghy – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I do some event photography like dance events, street photography and mainly focus on portraits as of right now! Surprisingly enough, my B&W photography are my pride and joy! I actually started off strictly doing B&W’s when I first picked up a camera. Since I started out doing mostly dance event and street photography then moved to portrait photography, it gave me a lot of experience with working with different kinds of people and be myself the “goofy photographer guy”.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success? What’s that? I’m kidding but if you’re honestly happy about how you work, it turns out without others’ opinion on it, I would say that’s being successful to me! In the end, it’s art, if you really tried to express yourself through it, success will come and people will notice and see how hard you’ve worked on it and appreciate it as well. Like they say art can speak and the love, sweat, tears really shows in your photography!
