Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanna Brooks.
Breanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been a person that wanted to make a difference and wanted to be a change agent. I’ve always been involved in community service projects and organizations where I had some sort of leadership/influencer role. Since college, I went back and forth with the idea of being some sort of influencer. Well, at that time “influencer” wasn’t really a thing. I was heavy into watching YouTube videos of people and some I knew personally. I said you know what? I could do that and my voice could be heard by millions. I’ve always felt I had something dope or inspiring to share with others. I’ve seen and experienced a lot and had to grow up faster than a lot of people my age. People to this day tell me how encouraging I am and how they appreciate my true transparent/genuine self. This year I decided to put action to my dream of leaving my “influencer” carbon print in the world by launching my blog, Breana-nicole.com. It will be launching by the end of the year. I’ve worked so hard on this. I wanted to create something I can call my own while encouraging my generation to simply be the best version of themselves. While I’m still a work in progress, I think that what makes people gravitate to me because I’m not putting out this image of perfect life. I’m a black millennial wife, mother and corporate gal going through everyday life but still someone manage to encourage those around me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth road because in all honesty somedays I don’t feel so motivated. I still at times question exactly where I’m going in life or how will this turn out. However, I tell myself I rather try than not try at all. Like at the end of the day, people opinions are only opinions, don’t let the fear of the unknown stop you from going after your goals. Even if you feel the venture/business is oversaturated, remember they are not you. While they may be thriving and doing great things, they are not you. You have something special to offer so you owe it to yourself to go for it.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m in the process of launching my website Breanna-nicole.com. Where you can find tips or just my experiences with lifestyle, motherhood, marriage and being a corporate millennial. I wanted to give my audience a broad range of topics because I’m more than just a mom or a wife. I’m also a corporate gal and juggling with trying to move up the corporate ladder and break glass ceilings. So, I have a lot of roles as you can see. I’m transparent with my followers on social media all the time by sharing my good moments, not so good moments or just need to vent. I think what sets me apart is I’m me. There will never be another me so that alone sets me apart. If you follow me @ Breanna.nicole on Instagram, then you would see.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I’m honestly still looking for good mentors. When I say good. I mean genuine people who are willing to give you sound, honest advice and truly have your best interest at heart. I can say attending local events such as those by Marty McDonald from Boss Women Media has definitely helped me with making some dope connections with people. The advice I would give someone is to find your tribe and don’t rush it. Don’t worry who’s not noticing you, focus on the people who are and build on that.
