Life and Work with Karla Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Hernandez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The story of our business is writing itself as we speak. My husband and I have always enjoyed cooking for our family at parties or simply a Sunday evening to watch the Cowboys game. It wasn’t until recently that a family member asked us how much we would charge her two large pans of a chicken-fajita-sausage mix that we launched into business and starting promoting on Facebook and Instagram.

Has it been a smooth road?
The struggles I face are within myself to try and perfect recipes but I quickly learned I cannot compare my recipes with others because mine have to be unique to my business. It’s trial and error day by day from buying too much food to not buying enough. We literally have to write everything down to remember how much of this we have to buy to feed this amount of people.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am more of the behind the scenes food preparation, experimenting recipes, chopping and cutting. We offer catering services from taquizas, which are setting up the flat iron grill at your even and making tacos, to chicken and fajita mix. We also smoke briskets, charro beans, rice trays, salsas, chicharrones and carnitas among others. We are trying and adding new dishes every week that passes. What I would say that sets us apart is the flavor we put in our food. For example, the beef fajita in our chicken-fajita mix is mesquite wood smoked. The meats we buy are quality and we never buy cheap meat just to save some money. We would love to eventually plant our own produce such as the peppers and cilantro to never miss out on flavor. Buy produce at stores we are running the risk of produce that has been frozen for preservation purposes.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I follow so many pages on Instagram of women entrepreneurs who are not only working 12 plus hour shifts and still going home to be a full-time mom and wife. Women are such versatile human beings, we adapt to anything and everything and I believe any job a man can do whether in corporate America or physical, women can do just as good. More and more women are steering away from the “this is a man’s job”. I have seen women who work in construction and work in putting up sheetrock and throwing concrete.
