Meet Trailblazer Alexis Jacob

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Jacob.

Alexis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Most people will tell you that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach… and well, they would probably say the same about me. I love food! So much so that growing up my friends and family would refer to me as the “garbage disposal”. There really was not much that I wouldn’t eat and for a long time, I didn’t have to watch what I ate. However, that all came to a screeching halt when I got sick at my college graduation party. I got food poisoning that lasted over a week and left me with a number of “challenges” with digestion.

I couldn’t digest meat. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t keep down anything from ground turkey to seafood. Now, this diet change could have been a simple fix for a lot of people, but coming from a creole family, this was the end of the world. Thankfully, I had friends who supported me and helped me start my plant-based journey.

A couple of months after the diet change, I began posting different plant-based recipes on my social media platforms and the engagement I received was nothing that I could have planned for. I received countless requests for meal prep, recipes, and tutorials! After moving to Dallas, Texas in 2017, I knew it was time to start sharing my story and my love for food in the form of a business. I began my meal prep business “Living Healthy with Lexy”, where I made healthy, balanced, plant-based meals for my clients. I had clients from new mommies to beauty queens. In addition, I began my blog “Alexisbrielle.org” and made it a point to share recipes, tutorials, and my experiences in living a holistic, plant-based lifestyle.

While I truly enjoyed meal prepping, I have switched my focus towards expanding my blog and sharing my experiences via social media platforms. In the near future, I will be re-launching my meal prepping business to assist in everything from smoothies, to weekly meals, and even baby food!

Has it been a smooth road?
This journey has been filled with various obstacles and at times it seemed like there wasn’t a light at the end of the tunnel. Yet, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

In the beginning, my biggest struggle was having confidence in myself to speak to people about the benefits of a plant-based, non-toxic lifestyle. I was afraid of judgment. Most of the time, I found myself constantly thinking about what others thought about me, if people thought that what I had to say was relevant, or if I was even qualified to share my experiences.

It took some time to be able to work through the self-doubt. It was especially difficult to remain positive when a lot of people around me had negative things to say and felt that I had gone off the deep end. But one thing that I realized, and I believe that it’s something that women who are starting their journey towards a healthier lifestyle should know, is that regardless of credentials or your past you have a story to tell that was going to help people in more ways than one. It may be intimidating to take the first step but your journey and commitment to your goals may be the very thing that inspires another woman to take the first step towards a positive change.

Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
My business, “Living Healthy with Lexy”, began as a meal prep service where I would do more than just cook. I strived to educate my clients on the benefits of eating and living a balanced, healthy lifestyle. As of today, I have made a number of different changes to my business and very soon I will be re-launching with everything from smoothies to baby food!

In the meantime, I am focusing on sharing my plant-based recipes and experiences on my blog, “Alexisbrielle.org” and on social media platforms. I believe that with our society becoming more technology-based, it is vital for people to be able to reach my blog and content with one click of a button or one tap on a social media post.

While there a number of different bloggers and meal prep services that you can choose from in 2019. I believe that what sets my business and blog apart is the unscripted, “raw-ness”, and transparency that I strive to have with everything that I share. Anyone can tell you how to implement different changes to your daily routine that will benefit your health. But I choose to be honest about the challenges that I face, the unpleasant side of plant-based eating/living, and what changes that can be made to avoid making the same mistakes that I once did.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
Of course! As much as I love a good self-help book and a juicy podcast. Three resources that have truly changed my life are … a notebook, journal, and a planner. So exciting, right? Believe it or not, I don’t leave my house without these each day.

Throughout the day there are plenty of times when my mind may wander and I think about an idea that could be beneficial for myself, my friends/family, or my business. To keep track of these different ideas, I don’t leave the house with a pen and notepad.

Next, I believe that each day we are able to learn about different things in life. Whether it’s about ourselves or the environment around us, I do my best to keep track of my experiences. I do this by keeping a journal and jotting down what I have learned either at that moment or decompress at the end of the day.

Last but not least, a planner. While I love the idea of having a planner in your phone and being able to access it at the tap of a finger, there is something so pivotal about writing things down. To avoid becoming overwhelmed with a To-Do list, planning out different events, or having to cancel plans because of over-committing myself, I carry around a planner and try to write things in it each and every day.
