Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Hopkins.
Kimberly, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was six, my grandmother bought me a Barbie Doll Camera (I thought I was the coolest kid ever, taking pictures at the family reunion.) I guess you can say photography was my first love. As the years went by I found new interests; sports and architecture. I went off to school and majored in Architecture at Prairie View A&M University; where I fell in love with designing buildings and taking pictures of my architecture models with my Nikon D3000 DSLR camera. (Thanks Mom and Dad.) I transitioned from taking pictures of school projects to pictures of family and friends. The more I started to take pictures; I realized the images were telling a story, creating a memory, and something that would last a lifetime for future generations.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not! After graduating with my bachelor in Architecture; I decided to go for my Masters in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Texas at San Antonio and to find a 9 to 5 job; which took time away from photography. However, during my graduate study, I started to learn more about cities and what shapes them outside of the Architecture Design component. I asked myself how I can incorporate my photography skills with my planning and architecture background. I started to walk around downtown or any city I traveled to and starting taking pictures of how people move throughout the city. I walked around downtown almost every other day; when I lived in San Antonio until people started to know me and would ask “What are you shooting today?” and I would always share my photos with them.
To me this made me feel good to see excitement on another person’s face. I think photography helped me a lot with my depression and shyness; it allowed me to share my views of life through my camera and how I viewed it. The more I shot the more I wanted to start submitting my photos to artists’ calls; the first art submission I submitted to I was not selected nor the second or third. I wanted to know how are my photos different from the other photographers that were getting accepted; so I started to attend different exhibitions and surrounding myself with creative photographers, painters, and sculptors to have a view of all arts.
I took a different approach the fourth time around; I started to set up at vendor events to promote my photography business and I continued for two years straight and I even got my own photography studio (which failed 1 year later but that didn’t stop me). Once my work started to be seen I started to submit my work to galleries in Texas and outside of Texas. My first gallery showing was in Mobile, Alabama which lead to other group exhibitions and eventually to my first Solo Exhibition in 2018. Running my photography business has definitely had its ups and downs but I’m proud of how far I have come and I look forward to the future.

I’m a street and lifestyle photographer based in the DFW area and I travel throughout Texas. I love working with a variety of clients from special events to family portraits. (Creating everlasting memories is my goal.) I have a passion for urban and traditional photography and that influenced me in the way I shoot, pose and edit my images. I’m always looking for a new way to improve my photos and to provide the best customer service. K.Hop Photography was established in 2011 but took off in 2014; since then the company has created many wonderful memories and looks forward to creating more memories in the future.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Social media plays a major role in today’s society and the world of photography is constantly changing. Today’s photographers are becoming more creative (there are no limits); which some photographers have motivated me to continue shooting and being creative. So, in the next 5 to 10 years, I see the photography industry heading towards more street photography, phone photography (Cell Phones are so advanced now!), and Creative Urban photography.
