Meet Cameron Dawson and Joe Sterling of Cutthroat Conspiracy in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Dawson and Joe Sterling.

Cameron and Joe, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Cutthroat was formed started by Cameron in May 2016 in one of many jam rooms found at Cozmic Rehearsal. It was built out of a love for Metal-core music and a desire to bring it back to the ears of the public.

Cutthroat had some fantastic luck in finding it’s original members and building a solid musical foundation from scratch. We’d cut our teeth performing our initial shows at Bathtub Gins and Tomcat’s West in Fort Worth. The crowd response we received in those initial shows was astounding. Rustin Luther recommended we come out and play a Blue Rupee show at The Curtain Club in November of that year with Headstitch. We filmed a live set there and that garnered us enough attention to be invited to compete in The Battle For So What! in March of the following year.

With our crowd cheering us on we won that battle and went on to play the So What! Music Festival in 2017. A memory which will always be a highlight of Cutthroat’s musical career. After this event, we were nominated by our fans for The Eagle’s “Hit The Lights” contest to play with Metallica. We didn’t take that one home, but simply being nominated was an honor. Despite all of these highpoints, differences in musical direction got in the way and some member’s departed near the end of 2018.

Cutthroat went through a rigorous rebuilding process after that and came back with a vengeance in July 2018. Sporting three new members, we released our music video for “The Summit”, had a solid comeback show at The Rail Club Live, and took home the number 1 spot in 2019’s Battle for So What!

We’ve continued to build from there and our working on putting out our full-length album.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth…..ish. As with any band we’ve had to budget our finances and personal lives to keep the band and music alive. And, due to musical differences, we’ve had some roster changes and gone through a rebuilding process along the way.

We’d love to hear more about your band.
Cutthroat Conspiracy is more than just a band that’s heavy for heavy’s sake. We specialize in melody, albeit odd for a metal band. When we write we tend to bring in melodic characteristics, be it in the guitars, vocals, or general ambience. We have break downs in our music, but overall we tend to sound pretty.

We also attempt to project a message of self-empowerment and hope to our listeners. As well as put on energetic and enthralling live performances.

Aside from the local accolades we’ve picked up over the years, we’re just proud to see our crowd come out in full force and sing right along with us.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Dedication to the craft and our drive to simply work together. There’s no true hegemon here. We have developed a flow when it comes to the writing process and everything now seems to happen naturally. That flow has allowed us to put together some solid and thought-provoking music over the years.

We couple that with our passion to make personal connections with our fan base and it’s seemed to merit us some success.
