Meet Victoria Plummer of Femfit in Downtown Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Plummer.

Victoria, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My fitness journey started when I was pretty young. My Dad was a huge Arnold Schwarzenegger fan and loved bodybuilding. He used to bring me and my siblings with him to the gym and we stayed in the daycare while he worked out. When I turned 12, I was FINALLY old enough to work out on the gym floor and I couldn’t wait! My Dad taught me the importance of proper form and I was able to eventually Squat 135 lbs. I loved the bonding time with my Dad and I felt accomplished! But then in middle school, a girlfriend told me that my legs were “too strong” and that “guys don’t like that”. So, I quit working out! It’s been 18 years since then and I still remember that feeling of inadequacy.

After high school, I started working out again but not consistently. I spent most of my young adulthood trying to seek the approval of others rather than doing what was most beneficial for me. (Kind of like in middle school.) I spent TOO many years trying to fill the void in my heart with all of the wrong things; like men, alcohol, and drugs. Those things never brought me lasting happiness.

In 2012, I finally hit rock bottom when I was arrested for DWI and put on probation. As part of my probation, I had to do community service, substance abuse counseling, and Alcoholics Annonymous. The combination opened my eyes to the fact that alcohol was DESTROYING my life and my relationships. I thought maybe there really WAS a higher power that could help me stop drinking.

During this time, I started taking boxing which was something I had ALWAYS wanted to do but was always too hungover to get up and go. I also started to listen to sermons online which really helped empower my mind. This eventually led me back to being consistent in my fitness journey and in the best shape of my life! Through faith, I had found a new strength, confidence, and hope. My self-worth was no longer being dictated by what others thought of me. The void was no longer there, and I was no longer a slave to destructive behaviors. Of course, I am not perfect but I felt a new sense of purpose to help others. I realized that I am not the only one who went through hard times, and I felt like I could help people thru personal training.

In 2014, I started studying to get my personal training certification. Then, I quit my stable job of nine years as a Pharmacy Technician. I took a HUGE leap of faith to become a personal trainer. I trained for over three years at 24 Hour Fitness and became a Master Trainer there. I gained so much knowledge and experience by working with all types of people! I loved it. I loved helping people achieve their goals.

Lots of other great things have happened since I decided to CHANGE. I went on a mission trip to Haiti, which I never in a million years thought I would do! It allowed me to see what true poverty is, experience a different culture, while also helping others. I also started traveling a lot more! It’s funny how much more money you have when you don’t waste it partying. Broken relationships in my family have been restored, and I am SO SO GRATEFUL for that. I met the man of my dreams and married him in 2017! Let me just say, GOD IS GOOD!

After getting married, I moved in with my husband and decided to start my own company. I wanted to have my own fitness business for YEARS!!

During the first year of business, I worked for a local gym and trained a few clients independently through Femfit. The second-year business really started booming and I started to ONLY train clients independently. I still train at the local gym as an independent trainer, as well as train clients at their apartment gyms. I train a majority of women, and I started realizing that their biggest problem is nutrition. So I decided to start learning more about nutrition so that I could help them more. Currently, I am working on getting certified as a Nutrition Coach through a well-known company called Precision Nutrition.

In the coming years, I plan to continue training clients in person and offer online fitness and nutrition coaching.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overcoming my struggles with alcohol was the biggest obstacle before I became a trainer. That was not easy. But I am thankful that I went through it because I was an absolute mess. Most nights I would drink until I blacked out. I would wake up not remembering what happened the night before. All of my romantic relationships and friendships involved partying and were not healthy. When I got arrested for my DWI and put on probation, I had to completely change my life or else I would go to jail. While on probation I was not allowed to drink, and I had to blow into a Breathalyzer to start my car. On top of this, I had to do Substance Abuse Counseling because my lawyer told the judge I was an alcoholic. However, despite knowing that alcohol was DESTROYING my life, I couldn’t stop.

One night I went to a friend’s house and drank until I blacked out. The next day I decided that I would wait until 3 PM to start my car because of the breathalyzer, but it wouldn’t start! When I went to my monthly check-in with my probation officer, she confronted me about it. I balled my eyes out because this violation of probation would send me to jail! Instead, they sent me to Alcoholics anonymous.

Soon after this, while I was doing community service, someone shared that God might be the thing missing from my life. I realized that God was the void I was missing in my heart, and through seeking God I was finally able to quit drinking.

Alright – Tell us about your work. What should we know?
Femfit is a personal training, fitness, and nutrition coaching business. I specialize in helping women who want to get fit and healthy. Usually, these women have lost weight doing a fad diet and gained it back, struggle to be consistent with fitness, and/or struggle to lose weight. I help them by creating a program that is balanced, sustainable, and something that they can do consistently. I help my clients focus on making one change at a time, rather than changing everything at once. A lot of people have the all or nothing mindset, so if they can’t stick to a strict plan, they give up. When a plan is too difficult, it is not sustainable and therefore the client won’t be able to do this long term which leads to them gaining weight back. That is why my approach is customized to the client, focused on making one change at a time, and making this a lifestyle. Change is hard, but small improvements over time lead to stunning results!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God gets all the glory!! Besides God, my parents deserve credit for taking me to the gym with them when I was 12. My husband and my family for always supporting me. My clients for trusting me and making me a better trainer and coach through experience. All of my sisters in Christ for walking this crazy journey with me.
