Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily McClure.
Emily, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up I was a fan of photos, the printed ones, the Polaroids! Although I wasn’t a huge fan of school day portraits, I was intrigued by the process, the black comb, the flash, the printed 8×10 photo behind the glossy paper!! Fast forward to adulthood, I purchased a 35mm Pentax film camera and started shooting! When my friend asked me to help her with a wedding, I was hooked!!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Growing in business takes time and energy, and willingness to learn. My thought was it’s not a win or loss, it’s a win or learn. That has helped me stay positive and focused to move ahead. I often wear a t-shirt that states Keep Moving Forward to remind myself. My faith in Christ has helped me be mindful of the bigger picture as well.
Learning to manage a business, to recognize the need for an assistant, the value of client appreciation & the bottom line all took time. Setbacks have happened when I didn’t plan well, educate my clients well or stayed rested to be my best. Now I have an automated workflow to educate my clients better and Kristen, my assistant to help me stay on task!
Please tell us about EM Corporate.
I started my business ten years ago and have done a few genres, but now specialize in Corporate Photography. Whether it be a fabulous headshot, team photos, custom stock photos, branding content or exteriors of your space, I’m your gal!
I’ve always been a fan of business and industry, so having the opportunity to document the folks in these spaces is just an honor. Walking into high rise office buildings is a thrill and the small business owner is interesting to me as well! I’ve heard you have two seconds to make a great impression with your headshot, so let’s make it a great one!! I”m now an ambassador of Slik tripods and honored to represent the great company with quality products.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to talk to anyone and to put people at ease. In business, that is extremely helpful and a huge asset when working with people’s faces! Additionally, I have the opportunity to work alongside organizations I support and provide event coverage and headshots for their teams as well. Those include Lance Olinsky with Streetside Showers, Josh & Courtney Willis with Mission Regan & Women of McKinney.
I”m most proud of the people I’ve helped along the way, the way I run my business & the ability to speak at Shutterfest, a photography conference next spring.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
This is my favorite question!! I would have started my corporate business brand earlier & have been willing to try new things sooner. I didn’t do studio work for a long time because I was afraid and didn’t know-how. I turned that into a purpose to learn as much as I could!
