Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Kearney a.k.a. 3triple D.
3triple D, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
“Music is my life”. That’s a quote thrown around like pigskin on any given Sunday. People tend to think that just because they have an obsession or a high skill with music it makes it “life”. However, with me, it’s what makes my heartbeat. It’s the oxygen I inhale and the carbon dioxide I exhale. I remember being a kid and I sung, well, I mean extremely well, like put the current me to shame well. I’ve also always been big, fat, large, husky you name it, even as a child, so all I had to get the girls was my voice.
People would talk about the way I looked and dressed but they couldn’t deny the talent. In middle school, an older relative felt like I should switch focus and adapt a new skill since singing was second nature. I picked up rapping and got really good at it. I would write rhymes all day and night. I would skip school to hit the studio and even when I did go to school I couldn’t wait to get to lunch to throw my headphones on and brainstorm hits. When I got to college I was on a different level. I would freestyle better at parties than most people could write. I just have a way to manipulate words. (That’s probably why my favorite subject was always “Language Arts”) I had it going on but there was one issue, I was extremely shy. My queen pushed me until I got off the couch and took this serious back in 2014. Since then, I’ve opened up for a host of a mainstream artist, I’ve been on tours, and even battle rapped for awhile. Side note: I also love acting and have been on Jerry Springer. I’ve come a long way and have a very long road ahead of me, but a thousand-mile journey starts with the first step. I’ll make is simply because the love is genuine, my intentions are good, and my heart is pure. Godspeed.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If definitely has not been easy. Besides my queen pushing me, it took some people very close to me to die for me to take this serious. One of my relatives that died actually came up with the name “Living Royalty” and wanted it to be a record label but unfortunately, the dream died with him until one day an older relative, my queen and myself buckled down and resurrected the name. My aunt died of cancer and some of her last words were “Go hard, cause all of yall go hard”. Then, there was 11/29/2011, 7:04 pm, the day that change my life. I lost someone so close to me I didn’t know hurt could hurt like it did. But these people would kill me if I gave up. Add that to being scammed out of thousands of dollars, getting cheated out of contest, and people turning on you and you have a recipe for a quitter. I keep going because I’m hungry. You have to really want this.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I rap, sing, act, model, write, produce, and direct. Living Royalty is the brand. I am royalty and don’t have an issue proclaiming it. One thing that separates me from anyone else is a lack of fear. I’ll speak on whatever, whenever, to whoever regardless of what may or may not happen. I’m not ashamed of me. I buck the system and spit in the face of the social norm. I am the new face of music because I don’t and will not have a “Hip Hop Persona”.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Every Friday when I was about 4 or 5 years old, my mama, my little brother and myself would ride the bus to Irving where my dad lived. She would drop me off and me and my pops walked from the bus stop to dominos pizza and the movie store then to his crib. I’m a very sentimental person and having that to look forward to as a kid was everything.
