Today we’d like to introduce you to JasMeUp1X.
Thanks for sharing your story with us JasMeUp1X. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Although I’ve stayed throughout Texas, Dallas has always been home. I received my diploma from Poteet High School in Mesquite. Shortly after, I earned my associate’s degree at Tyler Junior College. Last but not least, I earned my bachelor’s degree in Communications and a minor in Psychology. After graduating from the University of Houston in 2017, I was completely lost. School was all I’ve ever known. The job I was interning for at the time did not follow through on their promise of employment with the company and I was stuck with bills and no money. I had a passion for beauty and cosmetics since I was younger but always considered it a hobby. One day, after hearing too many no’s during job interviews, I picked up my Tweezers and a case of lashes and said: “ I’m doing this”. I’ve haven’t put my tweezers down since that day.
Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, of course not. Obstacles are inevitable when it comes to developing your life in the way you are anticipating for it to go. Although I have a marketing background, I have found it very challenging to multitask and manage my time when it came to branding myself. I still struggle with expanding my social markets, sometimes. I would get discouraged because I would notice the followers or the likes of other women in my field. I would question my work and not post on my socials because I knew I wasn’t going to get the same response. During my full moon meditation around April, I released those insecure thoughts and did what I always loved to do. For those ladies who are making their marks in life, do YOU! As cliche as it may sound, it’s honestly the purest way to build. Everyone wants to be like everyone else. People will see your genuine lifestyle and associate themselves with you because of that. Love yourself first so you can love what you do.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a lash technician and a natural hair advocate. In the lash world, they call me the KlusterKween (pronounced Cluster Queen). The named was coined on how well my individuals (sometimes called cluster) lashes looked compared to lash extensions in lash school. I’ve been braiding and styling men/women hair since 2012 and started lashing I’m 2015. I started my brand with nothing! I was self-taught for years until I decided to get some professional guidance with my career at lash school. From learning the best products for hair care to eye care, it’s all been trial and error. I’m proud to use all the products my clients use to get the full experience and cater to my client’s needs. Also, I am investing more time networking with local businesses to expand on more organic and natural products that assist with skin and hair growth. I love to go out of the way and make sure that each service provided is tailored to any skin or hair condition.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
There are so many people willing to help, even it’s just to answer a question. I know it’s uncomfortable or weird, however, stepping out of my personal bubble has been the best thing in life that has happened to me. I’ve met so many awesome people who were open to questions, shadowing or fellowship. If there is someone who moves you professionally, reach out and invite them to dinner. You never know the commonality between both parties. Networking happens when open minds meet common interests. If you are trying to find a mentor or need networking opportunities, Just Speak Up!
